Ordinary blonde in this series of "most wanted beer" made by Engilsen, with intricately cobweb-lacing, medium thick, eggshell-white head sustained by lively sparkling and only slowly showing gaps, over an initially cristal clear, pure 'metallic' golden blonde beer. Aroma of unripe pear, sourdough, lemon candy, bread crumbs, orange peel, green Granny Smith apple, white bread, raw white celery, some light DMS (cooked cauliflower), young 'jenever', green kiwi, notes of melon, kitchen towels, breakfast cereals, bubblegum, rainwater. Restrainedly fruity onset, green apple acetaldehyde mixed with a dash of banana isoamylacetate, notes of unripe melon and pear, sweetish with sourish edge, the latter strongly accentuated by a very minerally, sparkling, stinging carbonation. Supple mouthfeel, cereally pale maltiness, bit grainy, dryish, white bread, with lingering unripe and 'green' fruitiness; softly bittering, grassy and floral hop finish with a 'dusty' note to it, dry and a bit yeasty too, but quite refreshing. The alcohol is noticeable, which should not be the case at this ABV. Typical Belgian blonde intended as a pale lager alternative, grainy and a bit 'empty', but at least not as sweet as is usually the case in this segment. Not my preferred kind of beer, but drinkable and quenching, not much wrong here except for that badly hidden alcohol and the slight whiff of DMS.

Strong Belgian ale from the new Engilsen brewery with thin but lacing, off-white head and hazy, deep brownish copper colour, clearly paler than usual for even a quadrupel, looking more like a barley wine, with tiny yeast bits floating around in it. Aroma of overripe peach, caramel, hazelnuts, some FFF (freshly fermented farmland), dry banana, candi sugar, pear, some vanilla. Pineapple and peach fruitiness in the mouth, spritzy to the point where it becomes perhaps a bit overcarbonated, sweet caramelly and honeyish malt base with a nutty accent, bit bready and yeasty in the end with earthy hops and a suggestion of warming alcohol. Lacks a bit of body to be a truly great quadrupel; this is more a kind of ’darkish’ tripel, but still a decent and rich beer, to sip carefully.

29/VIII/15 - 33cl bottle @ Lambiekstoempers bierfestival - BB: n/a (2015-1142)
Clear amber beer, aery irregular off-white head, pretty stable, non adhesive. Aroma: malty, some caramel, sweet, big sugary, yeast, dried fruits. MF: ok carbon, medium body. Taste: lots of yeast first, spicy, liquorish, little bitter, caramel, bit sourish. Aftertaste: yeast, lots of bitterness, caramel, hint of mocha, not too sweet though, pretty good.

Bottle @ home. Clear pale yellow color, average sized white to off-white head. Smell and taste lightly malts, some yeast, a hint of herbs or spices, lightly a touch of citrussy bitter. Decent body, firm carbonation.

Second beer of this new Limburg micro brewery, with an audibly crackling, frothy, egg-white, coarse head captured after fairly strong gushing but collapsing relatively quickly, over a warm ’old gold’ coloured beer with a delicate haze of yeast suspended in it, darker and cloudy with deposit. Estery, yeast-spicy, bit alcoholic and somewhat phenolic aroma of peach, pineapple, baked banana, grass, coriander seed, some faint iron, white bread, wet paper, honey, oude ’jenever’, cider, something vaguely gasoline- and band aid-like (phenols!) and a faint hint of H2S (rotting egg), but fortunately weak enough to remain probably unnoticed if served chilled. Taste begins fruity, typical and somewhat generic Belgian yeast effect of peach, pineapple and some banana, touch of green apple, fizzy carbo, smooth and supple mouthfeel, sourish accent of citrus peel refreshes a bit, residual sweetness not unlike white candi syrup, nice bready and ever so slightly biscuity malt sweetishness beneath, late and subtle, drying spice effect which I assume is the obiquitous coriander, bittering finish with leafy, earthy, ’noble’ hops as well as a fair dosis of gin-like alcohol, warming and a little bit wry on the root of the tongue, but not disturbingly so. Malty sweetness and alcohol are the last impressions, the hops fade away before that. In all: basically another cliché tripel, with a few minor flaws in the aroma, but the taste is enjoyable. With some more finetuning, this could become a very decent Belgian tripel.
