Description
Volkan beer is the first Greek beer born in Santorini, inspired and made from the finest local ingredients of the Cycladic islands. Santorini is volcanic and unique. Our spectacular island receives little rainfall, so what grows is intense in flavour and aromas and limited in quantity. In brewing Volkan we bring together, lava rock filtered mineral water and the best of local ingredients; rare Santorini grape honey and ancient citrus medica essence from Naxos.

Bottle. Deep brown colour with a mediumsized fluffy off-white head, which leaves some lace. Aroma is caramel, some chocolate, mild toffee, coffee, honey and mild toasted tones. Flavour is toffee, roasted, caramelly and mild nutty tones with a nice floral and grassy bitterness to it.

330ml green bottle. Pours a clear pale gold with a medium, foamy, long lasting, off-white head that leaves soapy curtains of lace. Semi-sweet aroma of bready pale malt, honey and skunky hops. Sweet flavour of toasted grainy pale malt, honey, grass, faint lemon and spicy hops in a dry, mild bitter finish. Light body with a watery texture and average carbonation. Crushable. Pretty standard.

330ml bottle. Pours a clear brown with red hue and a medium, foamy, short lived, beige head that leaves spotty lacing. Sweet aroma of roasted bready malt, dark chocolate, honey and earth. Sweet flavour of roasted caramel malt, honey, ash and day-old coffee in a dry, mild bitter finish. Light body with a watery texture and soft carbonation. Easy to put back. Not bad.

Bottle bought at a Kalamata hypermarket, drunk in Kalamaki under the orange trees. Hazy yellow-amber with a very tall, lasting head. Aroma of banana, citrus, and honey. Flavor is much more balanced and tasty than the black beer. Creamy mouthfeel, nice citrus touch like the US method of enjoying Paulaner Weißbier (with a lemon or orange slice). The honey adds a little sweetness and body. This is super refreshing after having run uphill a few hundred vertical meters into the olive trees earlier!

Bought at a hypermarket and drunk south of Kalamata on Easter Saturday. Dark, almost black with a light brown head. Smells super malty, molasses wort. Tastes like a roasty stout with incomplete fermentation, despite the sweetness it's lacking body and the aftertaste is gone like Arrow when the police show up. Although I guess this is how you make a dark beer that's drinkable in the hot Mediterranean sun.

Bottle that I picked up in Patras, Greece. Had this Friday 10th December 2021 listening to Steve Lamaqs Evening Session on 6 Music, we had Fish, Chips and Mushy Peas for tea tonight. A little boiled lozenge aroma, sweet in the mouth, a little wheaty with a subtle fruity tang. Struggling to hit the heady height of simply being ok.
