A recreation of BC’s first modern craft beer, Horseshoe Bay Ale (circa 1982). Golden-amber. Toasty amber, classic style, sweetish, off-dry finish. It’s mostly worth trying for the history, because obviously the beer landscape has evolved quite a bit since 1982.

Draft at the brewery. Dark reddish-brown. Sweet, nice chocolate, a touch chocolate each. The sweetness and choc character is nice but I also wish there was more smoke.

Draft - Rich toffee and nice brown sugars. Deep dark brown with a decent Light brown head. Toffee and nice toast with a bit of bitterness. Just like a gingerbread sticky pudding. Nice.

Bottle shared at a tasting. Pours orange with big chunks, large frothy tan head. Good head retention. Aroma of caramel, toffee, citrus, tropical fruit. The taste is bitter astringent hops and pale malt. Medium bodied, off balance and kind of all over the place.

On tap at the Alibi Room, pours black with a small tan head. Aroma brings out vanilla, cheap bourbon, and oak. Flavour is very cohesive, with medium complex bourbon, oak chips, vanilla, and subtler cocoa and roast. Not the most complex, but certainly nice - though I prefer the base beer.

Parfum agréable de marc de café et de céréales grillées... Au goût, c’est un peu mince (aqueux) et on note un côté terreux et un brin lactique à la fois. Très bon stout!!

For a black IPA this lacks much hop character, roasted Malts are not all the roasty and I picked up a bit of molasses. A by directionless.

Tap at Devil’s Elbow Black with tan head.Nose of very light smoke/light roast.More of same in palate with notes of chocolate. Subtle smoke…nice !!

Cask at Tap & Barrel, Coal Harbour, Vancouver
Black color, frothy head. Aroma of chocolate, rum, light tobacco. Lean body, the flavor is chocolatey, cocoa powder, luckily avoiding the roast or ash trap, with a mild rum character, maybe smoke.
Actually quite pleasant.
