Description
Kirkstall Brewery was inspired by the rich brewing history of Kirkstall village, which later formed part of the city of Leeds. The brewing company boasts a rich history spanning from the 12th century, where the Cistercian monks founded Kirkstall Abbey and began the area’s brewing legacy. The original Kirkstall Brewery was founded in 1871 and was in operation till 1983 when it was closed by its last owners, Whitbread. The buildings have been well preserved and are now home to students of Leeds Metropolitan University. The new Kirkstall Brewery is located on the Leeds Liverpool canal, in the shadow of the original brewery, reviving the tradition of brewing in Kirkstall and the inspiration to once again make the name famous for great beer.

Bottle from Drinkmonger. Slightly hazy golden body with a thin white head. Very light carbonation. Nice lacing. Aroma of what I’m pretty certain is the Citra hop - lemon, grapefruit, peach and soap. Flavour is similar to the aroma - this is a real hop bomb. Apricot and lemon with a light caramel backbone. Thin to medium body with an oily mouthfeel. Soft carbonation. This is the first Kirkstall Brewery beer I’ve tasted, and on this evidence it won’t be the last. It reminds me of Highland’s Island Hopping or a turbo-charged version of Fyne Ales’ Jarl - it’s packed full of fruity hop flavours. If I’m being picky, though, it’s a bit light on the mouthfeel. A less filtered version of this would be absolutely immense.

500ml bottle from either Beermoth or Trafalgar Wines. Try as I might I just can’t remember. Bucketloads of piney, mandarin hops which, after a rather bland, hugely disappointing local bitter, just about turned things around this evening. Kirkstall Brewery I have my eye on you.

Bottle from Bier Huis, Ossett. Slightly hazy pale amber. Thin, but tight, white head. Big, piney, fruity, oily, subtle as a brick IPA that delivers, as stated on the bottle, an intense taste experience. These Yorkshire lads don’t piss about, you know...
