Description
Gage Roads is the strip of ocean that separates Rottnest Island and Fremantle in Western Australia. It’s a home to surfers and swimmers; seagulls and sharks; ships and sailors. It’s a place where you can relax, escape, explore, or seek out adventure. We saw a lot of ourselves in that little spot. That’s why we named our brewery after it.

We set up shop in an old margarine factory just outside Freo over 14 years ago and we’ve been crafting beer there ever since. We make a range of ales and lagers, all of which are inspired by our place here on the WA coast.

330ml bottle into schooner glass. Aroma fruity. A little malt. Looks like average Aussie lager but zero head. Taste is slight fruit/malt. Finish is hoppy dryness. Pretty good for a sunny afternoon.

From a 330ml bottle on 20/12/2014. Pours a slightly opaque golden with a very small head. The aroma is disappointing with lagerish notes coming over the top of some mild fruit. The flavour is better with some sweet citrus and stone fruit, followed by some modest hops (I don’t detect the dry hopping). Light bodied with average carbonation. Passable but I can’t see this winning a lot of fans. Gage Roads Atomic pale ale is miles better.

Pours dark orange, quite hazy, small head, just a thin layer of foam. Aroma has some hop aroma, I also feel a bit of pure honey - that feels maybe a bit out of place but really honey-like. Hint about a stronger malt body? Taste is quite malty but hops are coming nicely out at the end. Not too thin, not too heavy - I have to say that this is actually not bad at all. Good session beer.

Bottle from Dan Murphy’s, brought to UK by Vinnie. Pours a deep dark ruby red colour with an off white head. Lovely aroma of chocolate, dark fruit, plum, date, malt and subtle spice. Medium bodied, slightly oily texture, milky chocolate finish. Very nice.

420 yen, 5.4% Bottle from a small liquor shop midway between the Sky Tree & Asakusa. Bought to get rid of that Virgo beer’s memory and due to the fact I’ve never seen this "fine craft beer from Australia" in Japan before. Served in a mini Duvel type glass a deep orange-gold with a decent head & a fruity peppery nose with strong citrus & earthy notes - interesting. Medium to full bodied with a tongue scraping bitter mouthfeel - in a good way. The taste is again pretty different from IPAs I am used to, earthy, lemongrass, citrus, pepper & quite bitter. Pretty damn good, a pleasant surprise at a great price for Japan. Best before feb 2014 this must be a hoppy beast fresh.

(Bottle) Slightly hazy pale golden amber with thin head. Pleasant aroma - fruity and grassy. Light body, very well carbonated, although a little brusque. The taste is dominated by hops, in a rather odd way. There is quite a bit of bitterness in the finish, and hops are present throughout that taste profile, however they are not terribly exciting somehow. There’s some pleasant light malt and some refreshing citrusy notes. Maybe my palate is jaded today; I felt I should have liked this more, but somehow it didn’t excite, but it is very drinkable.
