Bottled from Dan Murphy’s, Eltham (Melbourne). On July 28, 2013.States "Wahoo Kolsch" on the label.Clear golden color, white head. Sweet, malty, sugary, some vegetable taste. Medium mouthfeel, low bitterness. Sugary aftertaste. Sweet, malty, some vegetable scent.Not very nice at all.

Growler, 11C. Hazy pale orange with a large white head that lasts quite well. Aroma of hay, lemon, pepper, tropical fruits, a touch of honey. Carbonation a little high, but mouthfeel is full and still fairly soft. Sweet honeyed hay, a little bread, firm bitterness with a little lemon and spices. Some passionfruit and mango. No sign of the alcohol or any of the dodginess that can creep into lagers this strong. A real surprise packet.

330ml bottle. Orange golden amber colour, off-white foam head and aroma of malt caramel, orange, grapefruit, hop. Taste is malt caramel, peppery with pine notes and grapefruit bitterness. Medium bodied, medium carbonation, dry bitter finish. OK IPA.

(Bottle) Clear ruby brown with good off white head. Fairly subtle aroma, but definitely chocolate. Beautiful palate, medium bodied with carbonation that conspires to be both velvety and bright. The flavour is dominated (in a good way) by chocolate, a really pleasant chocolate which is surprisingly milk, rather than bitter dark chocolate. There are some nice estery tastes typical of a Belgian beer and some spicey hints. There’s also a touch of gentle bitterness in the finish, however this doesn’t really provide a crisp finish as the rich chocolate and, in the finish, distinct caramel notes last a long time. Overall, this is a superb chocolate beer, but it is more chocolatey than most, however the flavours are so good and work so well together.

From a 640ml bottle on 8/4/2013. Pours a clear dark amber with a small head which disappears quickly. almost no head. Has a quite a strong aroma of chocolate topping. The flavour is more sweet chocolate topping, a little bit of dark fruit, and a mild bitterness, followed by just a hint of booziness. The body is medium and the carbonation a touch higher than average. Can’t really detect any Belgian character to it. Definitely get the chocolate but there’s not a lot more to experience here. Easy enough to drink but lacking in complexity and character, which should be the hallmark of a beer of this nature. Still, despite not being a real success, it’s good to see Gage Roads trying to do something different through limited releases. Maybe next time guys...

Clear mid brown with an off white head. Aroma of chocolate, vanilla, nuts, caramel. Some raisins and prunes buried under the caramel. Low carbonation. Tastes of pretty ordinary milk chocolate, haZelnuts and caramel syrup with some spicy /medicinal notes. A little boozy but only right at the end. Not undrinkable but not a success. Can’t really tell if this is what they were going for. Odd.

Pours dark brown with a small fading off-white head.Nose shows some darker malt with toast notes and caramel, along with some soft tropical fruit and grassy hops.Some more soft toasty malt as a flavour along with booze, some plainn cardboard malt notes, solvent-like booze and a little tropical hops.Could use a richer body.

Clear copper with a large pale beige head that fades to a good coat. Aroma has citrus and tropical fruit poking through rather a lot of caramel. There’s lychees, oranges, passionfruit. Medium bodied, a little oily.Doesn’t feel very lively in the mouth. Moderate carbonation. Taste is not as sweet as suggested by the aroma and the bitterness is quite strong. There’s a little chocolate and coffee and the caramel melds well with the citrus flavours. The tropical fruits get a bit lost. Bitter finish with oranges is a little peppery.

From a 650ml bottle on 23/1/2013. Pours a clear dark golden with a medium head which disappears quite quickly. Has some light citrus fruit aroma with some caramel in the mix as well. Flavour wise, you get some sweet orange citrus fruits (orange and mandarin) and some rye bread and nutty malt. The bitterness is relatively firm with just a touch of sourness, and lingers. I actually started to enjoy this the more it opened up. I have no idea why this has be characterised as a DIPA - it doesn’t even present as a standard IPA, but it’s a pretty good beer.

Aromas of jam tart, citrus, apple and a little smoke waft up from the glass, making for a pleasant smell. The palate is quite peppery with malt and a little grapefruit. It stops a bit short but is a nice beer for a warm day, and a good option if you find yourself stuck at a major liquor chain.
