Description
Gage Roads is the strip of ocean that separates Rottnest Island and Fremantle in Western Australia. It’s a home to surfers and swimmers; seagulls and sharks; ships and sailors. It’s a place where you can relax, escape, explore, or seek out adventure. We saw a lot of ourselves in that little spot. That’s why we named our brewery after it.

We set up shop in an old margarine factory just outside Freo over 14 years ago and we’ve been crafting beer there ever since. We make a range of ales and lagers, all of which are inspired by our place here on the WA coast.

From a 640ml bottle on 1/11/2012. Pours a clear golden with barely any head. Has a modest sweet aroma of cooked vegetables. The flavour unsurprisingly features pumpkin, with a dash of cinnamon and other spices. It’s fairly subtle but pleasant enough. A decent if not particularly exciting brew.

Pours amber with a small head.Nose shows cinnamon, pumpkin and nutmeg. The spices are quite overt, only a little bit of supporting malt.Similar spices as flavours. Again, there is little in the way of malt character to carry things through. Falls flat quickly.Too much carbonation.

From a 640ml bottle on 16/9/2012. Pours a dark copper with close to nil head. Has a moderate sweet caramel malt aroma. Flavour wise, this is very malty, with more caramel, toffee and brown sugar in the mix, with some subtly spicy hops. The body is light to medium and the carbonation average. This is actually a good Aussie crack at an English bitter, and would be terrific for a session at 4.4%. Quite under-rated on here imo.

Bottle (640ml), 11C. Amber with a small off-white head. Aroma is fruity and floral with peach, light caramel, pears, a little pepper. Light bodied verging on watery, low carbonation. Modest flavours - caramel, fruit, light spices. Slightly earthy. Balancing bitterness. Dry and peppery at the end. Tried this a while ago and liked it better this time. Does what it came to do.

Bottle sample at a tasting at Dagan’s place. Thanks avrashi. Clear golden with a bit of white foam. Weak grainy aroma with a bit of malt, vegetal notes and a hint of hops. Weak flavor with faint bready malt, vegetables hints, sugary candy and a finish that’s a tiny bit drier. Really thin body. A very light and watery beer.

(bottle) Clear copper colour with some head. Aroma is pleasant dominated by hops giving a floral, grassy, slightly metallic notes. Medium body with good carbonation. Flavour starts with sweet rich malt and develops some hoppy complex fruit and spice flavours leading to some nice bitterness in in the finish. Overall a very pleasant, but restrained IPA, with hops flavour, but moderate bitterness on a malty base.

Pours amber with a small, fading head.Nose shows faint nutty malt, soft fruity hops, and a little bit of caramel too. Some caramel shows as a flavour too, along with some faint spicy hops followed by a mild bitterness.Could use more carbonation.

From a 330ml bottle on 26/3/2012. Pours a clear light golden with almost no head. Has a very faint smell of grain and urine. Clean and inoffensive in the mouth, with a the tiniest hint of citrus hops. Does not look, smell or taste like an ale - more like a fairly average premium pale lager.

Pours gold with a a small head.Nose shows caramel and toffee in large amounts, quite nice.Similar flavours, loads of malt with honey and caramel notes, similar to the IPA. Unfortunately is fall flat quickly after that.Body seems watery.I was quite surprised with this, especially after looking at other reviews. It’s actually quite nice, and far removed from the boring pale lager-like beer I expecting...
