Description
Gweilo was founded by husband and wife Ian and Emily and their friend Joseph, who each shared a simple dream: to create fun, fresh, natural, unpasteurised beers for the people of Hong Kong and Asia to enjoy.

We originally started contract brewing our Pale Ale, IPA and Wit beers in 2015, then in June 2017, our friends at BCI, who we met whilst home brewing in Hong Kong, acquired a minority stake in Gweilo and subsequently funded and managed the building of our flagship brewery, which opened in March 2018. We have a state of the art facility with a 3500L 4-Vessel brew deck, 115000L cellar, centrifuge, rotary canning and bottling lines and a lab. Head of Brewing Operations, Brian Leslie. Supporting him is an experienced team of brewers and packaging specialists. Now things are getting serious.

We have a Core Range of six beers, a Limited Range, a Collaboration Range and in time, we’ll be introducing barrel ageing and sour programs.

Our core range is true to our British roots, formed of session style brews ranging between 4% and 6%ABV. Keeping approachability at the heart of this range, we have a Pilsner, Pale Ale, Session IPA, Hoppy Wheat, Citrus Crusher and American IPA.

Our Limited and Collaboration ranges enable us to unleash our inner beer geeks and experiment. We intend to continually push the boundaries, brewing beers which take people on a journey through the wonderful and diverse world that is craft beer.

Can from Brewcraft at home. This has been in the fridge for a month or so I think, but we had several when fresher. Great beer from Gweilo. Pour is hazy golden orange pour with fine dense white head. Aroma is delicious lemon curd with vanilla, zest, oat. Taste is lemon zest tart bitter, with vanilla cream and some resin. Maintains a lightness despite the big flavors and creamy palate. Creaminess comes from fine smooth carbonation too. Really good, one of my favorite from Gweilo so far.

Can from Winerack at home. Translucent golden slightly peach pour. Aroma is tart and juicy strawberry, not so much basil, that sort of movie theater butter popcorn aroma that sometimes goes with goses. Tastes similar - tart and juicy strawberry with salty sourness. Very light carbonation with light palate.

Can from Winerack at home. Golden honey amber, slightly hazy with minimal white head. Aroma is milk chocolate, honey, and biscuit malt. Tate is mild earthy bitterness mellowed by syrup and chocolate sweetness. Palate is smooth with a bit too little carbonation, some mild chalkiness but nice overall. Feels a bit like a scotch ale.

Can from Winerack at home. Saw on Instagram today and bought right away - sounds interesting and I’ve enjoyed the tea-infused IPAs I’ve had. Aroma is very strong mango juice, like a boxed drink, with slight tea underneath but might just be power of suggestion. Taste is sharp, tart, bitter. Very strong and a bit unpleasant unfortunately. Some mango juiciness after the initial wave. Palate is smooth. Fuzzy NEIPA finish. Would love to try v2 but this isn’t quite there yet.

Their 3rd collab with Culmination. Exactly as described, though not quite as full as expected. should do a 13%abv barrel-aged cuvée version.

Can. Hazy gold with a modest white head. Aroma of pink grapefruit, light biscuit, some pine. Quite punchy citrus, fairly clean, enough malt to sit the hops upon although it doesn't do much else. Firmish bitterness. Fine.

Pulled a full stop gweilo by drinking a can of this in the airport Express train. Very malt forward. Golden orange pour with who knows what head since I drank from the can. Citrus and a little bark. The yau pale I just had had a lot stronger flavour. Light bitter and tangy end.

Shotglass showing pale gold with a finger of clean white foam. The nose shows moderately intense notes of pineapple and cannabis with light malt. The palate is well carbonated and medium bodied. Moderately intense notes of pine with light citrus, a strong malt backbone and lightly sharp pine bitterness.

Bottle at Gavel, Kuala Lumpur. Poured a hazy straw colour with a mostly lasting frothy white head. The aroma is grainy malt, yeasty, mineral, stone fruits, citrus. The flavour is moderate bitter, with a crisp, light fruity, dry hop bitter palate. Medium bodied with average carbonation.
