Description
Gweilo was founded by husband and wife Ian and Emily and their friend Joseph, who each shared a simple dream: to create fun, fresh, natural, unpasteurised beers for the people of Hong Kong and Asia to enjoy.
We originally started contract brewing our Pale Ale, IPA and Wit beers in 2015, then in June 2017, our friends at BCI, who we met whilst home brewing in Hong Kong, acquired a minority stake in Gweilo and subsequently funded and managed the building of our flagship brewery, which opened in March 2018. We have a state of the art facility with a 3500L 4-Vessel brew deck, 115000L cellar, centrifuge, rotary canning and bottling lines and a lab. Head of Brewing Operations, Brian Leslie. Supporting him is an experienced team of brewers and packaging specialists. Now things are getting serious.
We have a Core Range of six beers, a Limited Range, a Collaboration Range and in time, we’ll be introducing barrel ageing and sour programs.
Our core range is true to our British roots, formed of session style brews ranging between 4% and 6%ABV. Keeping approachability at the heart of this range, we have a Pilsner, Pale Ale, Session IPA, Hoppy Wheat, Citrus Crusher and American IPA.
Our Limited and Collaboration ranges enable us to unleash our inner beer geeks and experiment. We intend to continually push the boundaries, brewing beers which take people on a journey through the wonderful and diverse world that is craft beer.

330ml bottle from the brewery. Two months past the best before date. Upon opening the beer gushes profusely. What’s left pours slightly hazy amber with a medium-sized off-white head. Aroma is floral hops and biscuity malt. Taste is grapefruit, malt, light bitterness.

Crisp golden and light amber coloured body with a rather large, four centimetre tall tan head. Aroma of crisp fresh hops with some lighter malt, but the hops are more noticeable showing some tropical fruits, grasses and quite a bit of perfume. Light to Medium-bodied; Pungent hop flavour at first with tropical fruits, a touch of grass and perfume and a good deal of pine as well, but hardly any malt - this definitely shows the hop side of things without any balance. Aftertaste shows more hop flavours, and they are fresh, but no malt and the beer goes down quite easily, but is a tad too one-dimensional. Overall, a decent beer with some noticeable hop elements, but without and malt structure or complexities at the end, a rather simple beer that doesn’t show too much. I sampled this 33 cL bottle purchased from Fusion by ParkNShop in the United Centre at Admiralty, Hong Kong [island] on 29-July-2017 for HK$25,90 sampled in my hotel room here in Admiralty, Hong Kong on 03-August-2017.

Slightly hazy golden and peach coloured body with a frothy white head, about three centimetres tall that dies fairly quickly. Aroma of tropical fruits, grasses, light hay, some pungent malt and alcohol and finishing with pure passionfruit - very nice! Light-bodied; Strong grassy and tropical fruit flavours at first like guava and passionfruit, they die almost immediately without any malt or body, and just show water and pale grain without any support. Aftertaste shows some light hop elements, with no real malt, no alcohol, no pungency and only a touch of grasses and cardboard. Overall, a beer that started decently enough with a nice nose that dropped off immediately showing only some pale malt and cardboard with water instead of any real flavours. I sampled this 33 cL bottle purchased from Fusion Supermarket in Admiralty (United Centre), Hong Kong [island] on 29-July-2017 for HK$24,90, sampled in my hotel room here in Admiralty, Hong Kong on 01-August-2017.
