Description
Housed beneath The Rat and Ratchet and since the very first brew of Lab Rat in 2011, head brewer, Paul Spencer and brewer Robin Moss, have created rodent themed beers to critical acclaim. Our beers are distinctive, extreme, generally intensely hopped and anything but average, experimenting with a range of different beer styles, strengths and ingredients. Rat beer is now infecting all four corners of the UK faster than the Black Death, turning a local infestation into a national plague. White Rat in particular has emerged as the flagship beer and now sits within the Ossett core range.

Greenhead Beer Festival 2014. Darker golden in appearance. Easy enough textured, its water slips down the palate well. Hopped very light fruity taste.

Greenhead Beer Festival 2024. Slightly hazy golden colour with a thick creamy-frothy head from its hand pull at this festival. Hoppy, easy, mild tropical fruit notes are enough to provide a healthy character in both aroma and taste for this ale. A little grittier in its nose though.

Hamdpull cask at the Rat & Ratchet, Huddersfield. Dark gold, very murky with a full off-white head. Light aroma, grass, hay and boiled sweet, with some lime zest. Swet and slightly herbal taste at first, giving way to hoppy citrus bitterness. It's advertised as a 'dirty' IPA and it certainly feels a bit homebrew-y. A bit of a tough sell, this one.

Cask at Jolly Crispin, Upper Gornal. Aroma is citrusy and spicy. Clear brown gold. Thin creamy white head. Flava combines bitterness - resin - with sweet syrupy fruit and spice. Medium bodied. Oily..Soft-fizzy carbonation. Noise going apeshit on this? More like a bland IPA.

Hand-pulled pint at the Wrekin Inn on Saturday 8th June 2024 while watching a London Rock Band warm up (my son's mates, who had come up for his Birthday). The beer was a clear light golden colour with a white crust. Bitter with a citrus leaning, sweet malty molasses in the background, found it OK but didn't have another!
