Description
Barney’s started brewing at Summerhall in July 2012 in time to supply the venue’s Royal Dick Bar for the Fringe, but Barney himself began brewing aged 16 as a brewery apprentice. After bagging a first class degree in Brewing and Distilling at Heriot Watt University and packing in a high flying career promoting rum and whisky around the world, Barney decided it was high time he started to brew his own beer.
In doing so, his immaculate microbrewery has injected new life into Edinburgh’s brewing history, not least because he’s chosen to resurrect a brewery at Summerhall where beer has been brewed off and on for three centuries.

330ml bottle from Lidl (7.4% ABV); BBE Jan 2022. Drank at home on 3rd Oct 2020. Tanned head on a black body, nose and taste of malty molasses, semi-sweet and smooth; not too sure I could find any 'marshmallow' esters or flavours but it's a decent milk stout.

Bottle from Lidl. Near black in colour with a decently-sized, off-white, head. Vanilla oak, milk chocolate, a whiff of marshmallow and some toasty malts, before a warming and sweet finish. Enjoyable.

Can from Aldi. It pours cloudy mango orange with a small white cap. The aroma is sweet and tangy, very juicy, loads of stone fruit, mango, apricot, nectarine, orange creamsicle and sherbet. The taste is crisp, dry, tart, tangy, sweet - sour, juicy stone fruit, big apricot character, peach, mango, bright sherbet vibes and refreshers with a dryish finish. Medium body and fine carbonation. Works really well actually. Nice blast of stone fruit and sherbet. Not a huge amount of depth, very enjoyable nonetheless.

Bottle from Lidl Well the aroma is definitely very strongly marshmallow ! Pours a very dark reddish brown with a small transient beige head. Not so much marshmallow in the taste, though it is there. More milky coffee, roasted malts and dark fruits. Bitter coffee grounds in the finish. Really easy drinking – I was shocked when I looked to see how strong it was !

330ml bottle from Lidl @ 7.4%. Black with beige head with some retention. Initially a vanilla and chocolate milkshake aroma but once the beer has warmed up you can add roasted malts and coffee. Smoothish body with just the right amount of carbonation. Quite sweet but not overdone for a milk stout. The taste is vanilla milkshake with a slight red fruit sourness, then the roasted malts come through with a sharp bitterness when drinking at fridge temperature but more mild afterwards. Sometimes I just cant wait! This is an excellent milk stout.

330ml can from the brewery. Poured a hazy medium red colour with a very short-lived fizzy off-white head. The aroma is yeast, big cherries, sweet glucose. The flavour is moderate sour, with a light, crisp, juicy cherry fruit palate and a lingering lip puckering sour cherry finish. Medium to light bodied with lively carbonation.

330ml bottle from the brewery. Poured a clear golden colour with a short-lived frothy white head. The aroma is malt, herbal, fruity, light woody hops. The flavour is moderate bitter, light sweet, with a light, slightly watery, malt, mineral, sweet porridge and honey palate. Medium to light bodied with average carbonation. Very unusual, but slowly started to grow on me.

Can from the brewery. Poured a hazy golden orange colour with a short-lived fizzy white head. The aroma is yeast and big apricots. The flavour is moderate sour, with a fresh, light, crisp, tart apricot palate. Medium bodied with average carbonation. It’s all about the fruit and not much else. A decent beer though that will appeal to many.
