Description
Back in the 1980s Terry and Bev McCashin took on New Zealand’s brewing duopoly from a small Nelson factory using their own recipes. They gave people more than just something to drink…they gave us choice. And so began the craft beer revolution…

Bottle recommended by Eric at CK, thank you sir! "Try the Stroke beer" he said. Hazy golden yellow color, fluffy white head, solid lacing. Aroma of peppery and dusty lemons and straw. Taste is peppery lemons and cigars. Decent.

Bottle from the Pangaea Bottle Shop. Pours hazy light golden amber with a transient white head. Aroma is roast caramel with some floral/citrus. Flavor is roast caramel with some sturdy citrus/grapefruit rind. It’s very pleasant. It’s very bitter. Fruity and floral. Quite a hop mix!

Bottle. Gold with an inch of white head. Aroma of hay, toast, honey, very rip gooseberries, mixed citrus zest. High bead, slightly creamy mouthfeel. Taste is sweet and fruity with berries and light bread, then ctirus and pepper. Bitter finish with some spices. A fatter Kölsch with Kiwi hops is I guess what they say you’ll get and you do. A little leaner would suit me better, but it’s pretty gluggable.

Bottle, 10C. Amber with a large beige head. Modest aroma of oranges, caramel, bread, apricots. Taste has bitter oranges and kumquats, biscuit/ caramel sweetness, leaves, pepper. Moderately bitter finish with oranges and some tropical fruit notes. OK. Some flavours I don’t quite know what to make of.

From a 650ml bottle on 4/6/2012. Pours a clear dark golden with a medium head. Has a moderate aroma of spices, caramel and a touch of fruit. The flavour starts with a big dollop of caramel and biscuity malt and moves onto to some sweet citrus fruits (particularly orange). As stated on the bottle, there is some spice and pepper to be found in this decently hoppy brew. Slightly unusual and quite enjoyable.

From a 650ml bottle on 2/6/2012. Pours a light clear golden with a small to medium head. Has a modest aroma of biscuit, grass and citrus fruit which doesn’t reveal the intensity of what is to come. This is quite a difficult beer to categorise. It has a touch of caramel malt and lots of citrus fruit (orange and lemon) but it’s the long, slightly sour bitterness that really stands out (it’s quite grapefruity in that regard). It’s got some APA, IPA and Saison elements to it. This is a beer with a very distinct character. Interesting stuff, though the lemony sour bitterness is perhaps just a little over the top from a balance perspective.
