Description
Remnant Brewing opened in 2018, founded by four friends with a passion for craft beer. Joel is the dollars and cents guy, and Dave is the dreamer with a can-do attitude. Brittany, our GM, brings years of hospitality experience and shapes our team to welcome you into our taprooms. Last, (but arguably most important!) Charlie, our Head Brewer, is the bread and butter of this operation. He brings 17+ years of brewing knowledge to the table and crafts the some of the best beers around.

Canned 11/10/22, drunk 12/15/22. Lightly hazy, clementine-peach-golden. White head quickly to ring. Heavy clementine indeed, juicy cocktail orange, marshmallow, hints of lime and strawberry. Crackery malts in the background, no flaw, alcohol or resin. Maybe a bit heavily fruity for me, seems like maybe it needs to be cut with something spicy or piney? Dry and...petrol-like?? Interesting. Mineral, mint, chalk, clementine and soft, succulent, honey-like malts. Wow, this is much more interesting than the nose suggested. Much less sweet and fruity than expected. Some creaminess and lots of tropical fruit on the finish. Lots of melon, I guess. Could still use more bitterness, that being said. But its clean and interesting for the most part (though pushing it on the sweetness).

Brewery draught, 12/14/22. Heavily hazy blonde-golden-lemon. Small, white head quickly to cover/ring. Juicy as shit with mango, papaya and orange. Is there bubble gum there too? Dry, crackery malts but no pine or acidity that needs to be balanced. Clean, if lightly bubble gummy... Soft, juicy, dry, crackery. Lots of citrus and tropical fruit, very dry and crackery borderline too much so. But low, low bitterness and nice pulpy orange juice flavors. A bit more oomph as it warms, though also light twang. Needs more classic honey-like character.

Brewery draught, 12/14/22. Clear, blonde-golden, small, white head to ring. Nicely dry-hopped nose shows juicy white wine, rich herb, tropical fruit and no resin/punch. Cracker and honey malts balance. Clean, hop-forward. Soft, malty, hoppy but also with a hint of sourdough from the malt? Or is that just the hops. Dry, malty, fruity with peach, nectarine and white wine. It's like Nelson, except good! (This year's Nelson is mostly garbage). Malty, rich, well-hopped and balanced. There's a bit more of this sourdough character than I'd prefer on the finish but otherwise this is nicely done.

Brewery draught, 12/14/22. Inky, possibly opaque. Greyish-beige head hugs edges. Definitely a shit ton of cacao, though it's well-done and smells great on top of roast and chocolatey malts. Cinnamon's a bit prevalent...worryingly so. Not boozey. Don't really get any barrel character. Coconut, cinnamon, spicy whiskey liquor and almost a minty spice on the end with rich choco-vanilla. First i.pressions are that it's a bit too thin for its high abv. Lots of tannin, cacao, whiskey and light booze with a malty, but not thick or syrupy/overly viscous texture that's kind of a requisite in these beers to balance the high abv. That said, it's well-attenuated and no where near cloying. Just wave upon wave of vanilla and cacao, with cinnamon thankfully relegated to the background. This and vision Quest we're solid but not quite at the level that I know these guys can do. They've done probably more flavor at significantly less abv. So they need to dial that back or increase the malt density.

Brewery draught, 12/14/22. Clear, dark, drab mahogany. Small, beige head to ring. Strong whiskey, not quite too much, in the nose with spicy, chocolatey, lightly boozey tones followed by seemingly well-attenuated caramel and toffee notes. Would like more malt richness here... Though it's quite rich and not overly whiskey heavy in the mouth. Wow strange. It's like all barrel nose to an all malt flavor. Very soft, malty, with well-aged, mild whiskey notes and good balance of malt, acidity and alcohol, the last of which is mostly not present. This is really nicely done and the brewery obviously knows what they're doing with malt bombs. Not quite syrupy, but still thick, rich and pleasingly malty. Upon extended warming it falls down a bit as the malt thins out a bit and the barrel tannin and liquor grows a bit too strong.

Brewery draught, 12/14/22. Mostly clear, brassy-bronze with little/no head. Light lime and coriander add spice and acidity. Honey and bready-like wheat and barley gently in the background. Some cardamom spice but everything seems tastefully done here. Nice and salty, wheaty, slick, chewy texture with coriander and lime zestiness followed by light cardamom rich spice. Impressively tasteful on the adjuncts. These are all powerful, potentially ruinous adjuncts but this still allows the malt, wheat and fruity yeast to come through.

Brewery draught, 12/14/22. Lightly hazy, kumquat-golden. Small, off-white head to ring. Fruity, lactic and brett-ful nose shows lots of acidity though low acetic. Not any rum sharpness and not dominated by any one note, with no alcohol. Strong oak, not actually rum, with strong acidity led by heavy lactic and unfortunately moderate acetic. More sour in it's character, not vinegar-like. Soft, tannin and malt heavy texture with good attenuation and support. Lingering rum and lots of plum flavor with light fleshy character. Very, very sour, but otherwise well-done enough. Subsequent batches will hopefully be milder.

Brewery draught, 7/28/22. Heavily hazy, maize-pineapple, tiny ring of bubbles. Big pineapple and mango with light honey and white bread malt in support. No resin or weird yeast. Nutty, spicy, earthy and lightly funky with petrol, pineapple and a touch of spruce/pine. Malty and the rye adds texture, but it's extremely dry. Just too much acidity, alcohol and punchiness, as has been my complaint with most of their ipas recently.

Brewery draught, 7/28/22. Lightly hazy, copper-maize. Small, off-white head of low retention. Mega-fruity nose, lovely, mild lactic and Brett acidity with fruity yeast esters and hints of okay vanilla and biscuity malt. Clean, no alcohol or acetic character. Candy apple, caramel, lemon, succulent malt and generous, even lactic acidity alongside fruity Brett. Soft and malty, well attenuated with a touch of oak tannin and light vanilla. Lovely, lovely, nicely lagered stuff.

Brewery draught, 7/28/22. Unclear dark mahogany. Dark beige head shows low retention. Raisins, cherries, vanilla and molasses with spicy liquor and mild chocolate. Not boozey, clean, no big lactose. Soft and malty, burst of lactic and roasted acidity mixing with light barrel spiciness. Gains some vanilla and light lactose, with dry, spicy alcohol keeping the palate loose. Again, as with Ol Hanse, just super dry, lighter in body than I think is needed to balance the alcohol and liquor notes. No real heft, no viscosity. Just drinks like a Guinness in body and that doesn't work for its size. The lactose doesn't help, certainly.
