Eines vorweg: Dieses Bier ist extrem süß; es mag zwar ein paar rauchige Aromen haben, aber ist ist und bleibt primär malzsüß - es erinnert sogar ein bisschen an Ovomaltine. Aber was dem Bier bei aller Süße doch gelingt, ist eine Abgrenzung zu den Malzbieren, da es keinen unangenehmen Beigeschmack hat. Ein Bier für Freunde des unverfälschten Malzgeschmacks im Bierformat.

Die Wieselburger Biere haben ja nicht den allerbesten Ruf, aber das Schwarzbier hat mich überrascht. So wundert es mich einmal, dass die Wieselburger Brauerei überhaupt ein solches spezielles Bier herausgibt und zum zweiten, dass es gut ist. Es hat angenehme Röstmalzaromen und einen deutlichen Geschmack nach Kaffee. Dabei ist es gut balanciert. Kann man immer wieder trinken.

Rated from old notes. First impression was of a weak, almost watery beer lacking in aroma or nuance. Faintly skunky aftertaste. An undistinguished offering.

Canned 500ml. -from and at various locations accross Austria (gas stations and supermarkets). Had this one more than 20-30 times in last several years but never wrote my notes on the paper to rewrite it here. So this rate goes from my memory. Pale golden coloured, small to medium sized white head, mild dusty grainy nose. Weak malty, slightly watery, notes of grain and touch of metal with short bitterish finish.

Bottle, kindly shared by Gurthnar, many thanks. Dark brown color with medium beige head. Roasted malt, coffee, dark chocolate in aroma. Taste, roasted malt, coffee, caramel. OK.

Die Wieselburger Biere haben ihre Freunde, aber die meisten sehen sie eher als unangenehmes Schüttbier. Dem Kaiserbier, das aus der gleichen Brauerei kommt, geht es nicht anders. Das Stammbräu ist das über Jahre hinweg gepflegte Qualitätsbier, das mit mehr Vollmundigkeit und Geschmack auch erfahrenere binden soll. Das ist wohl auch gelungen. Man bekommt ein solides Bier mit einer schönen Würzigkeit, das auch ordentlich süffig ist.

500 ml flip-top bottle from a supermarket.
Almost black body, with a big, creamy, lacig, dark beige head.
Aroma of dark bread, grains, caramel, dark fruits, roast.
Taste is quite light, with about the same aromas and some more cocoa.
Medium, creamy mouthfeel, with a moderate carbonation.
Finishes medium roasty, quite dry, bready, a bit dark fruity.
Good. Not much sweetness fortunately, with some nice dryness, but too mellow for my taste. Decent beer, but a quite soft style example, which is propably intended, as their clientele is more mainstream.

0,5l flip top bottle bought at random Spar in Vienna. BB 02/2016. black color, small tan head. smells malty sweet, light roast, caramel, earthy. decent smell. light to medium body, nice soft carbonation, rather light mouthfeel. tastes of spices, earthy, light sweetness, roast notes. finishes rather light with roast and spices. good stuff, rather light but drinks quite nice.

Can @ Sirmione, Lago di Garda. Pours clear pale yellow with a white head. Aroma of very light malt, grain, corn, hay. Flavor is sweet, grainy, corn. Thin to medium body, average carbonation. 100815
