Bottle conditioned 500ml: BBD end of Jul 2013. Poured into an Abbot Ale glass tankard on 7 Jun 2013. Co-Op badged as Gold Miner. Good looking, gold and bright body with a full, deep head of white foaming bubbles. The nose is subtle: biscuity malts and nuts mostly. Malts to the fore in the taste as well: however, a crisp hop bitterness is also very evident in the flavour, it also gives the beer a dry finish. More complex than I thought it would be and interesting as well. Lively and well carbonated: a very pleasant surprise to be honest.

Cask-conditioned at the JDW on Whitehall, 28/5/2013. Attractive, deep copper with a tight, off white head. Toffee, with some red fruits and then not much else until a metallic, bitter finish. Not for me.

Bottle from a Co-op on Earl’s Court Road. Pours light copper with a white head. Aroma is very light caramel and light pitted fruit. Med body. Flavor is slight roast malt with a far amount of bitter - could be citrus. Drinks nicely. Finishes quite bitter.

One-third pint glass served on a sample tray from cask at JDWs Victoria Station. Devil black body, good lacing down the glass. Fine aroma of dark fruits. Roasted dark malts in the flavour profile strengthen by blackcurrants. Dark bitter ending. Medium bodied. Enjoying stuff (London, 02.11.2012).

[Cask at the Monks Retreat (JDW), Reading] Black with a moderate tan head and a light fizz. A big fruity berry flavour up front is followed by lots of coffee, then some ash and charcoal that is (unlike some stouts) not too overpowering. In fact there’s a lovely balance between the upfront sweetness and the bitterness from the heavily roasted malts. But the big winner here is the mouthfeel - rich and velvety smoothm and oh so easy to drink. For a beer of this strength it’s pretty dangerous how quickly it goes down - and how much you want another one straight away afterwards. A truly wonderful stout, marvellous stuff!
