Description
United Dutch Breweries in Breda was created when the Belgian Interbrew closed the Breda Oranjeboom brewery in 2004, which it had taken over in 1995. Oranjeboom's export department carried out a management buy-out and continued independently with Oranjeboom's brand portfolio, which was acquired from Interbrew. The beers are not brewed anymore in Breda but elsewhere.

[33cl can from Home Bargains, Bracknell. My 100th Dutch beer.] A straw coloured pour with a thick white head; corn syrup aroma; a grassy bitterness to start, then a corn and rice body, then downhill from there; but better than nothing.

Flesje gedeeld met Tomhendriksen. Diep donkerbruin bier met matig beige schuim dat als een film blijft liggen. Aroma is licht moutig. Smaak moutig en houtig. Jammer dat de smaak snel weg ebt.

Can from Home Bargains, Rochdale. Same size, name and design on the label, but this was at 3.5% so maybe a different version to the more established strength. As such this one tasted a bit like a lager-shandy.

Dutch session IPA, grabbed from a supermarket shelf (the Albert Heijn in Lokeren). Egg-white, moussy, frothy and thick, cobweb-lacing head, hazy straw blonde robe with golden glow. Aroma of fresh lemonbalm leaves, cereals, white bread, dried lemongrass, chamomile, white soap, green banana, touch of clove. Clean, sweetish onset, yellow fruit like halfripe banana and pear, touch apple peel, medium carb, smooth and oily body (feeling ‘fuller’ than expected at this ABV); cereally pale malt sweetishness, softly bittered by floral and lightly citrusy hops, bringing back the lemonbalm and lemongrass. Grassy end bitterness with equally proportioned pale maltiness flowing through, along with a vague chalky touch; the bitterness is, however, understated, so that the whole does end a tad watery. At about half a year of age, the aromas must have already dwindled, but the bitterness is clearly underproportioned for an ISA – the whole purpose of which is to pack a lot of flavour in a modest amount of alcohol. That purpose, I am sorry to say, has not been fully met here, but in all honesty I was not expecting much from this brewery either.

Can. Bit hazy pale straw golden. Crisp malts, soft citrus, cow feed. This has this massive hop extract aroma going on that the imperial IPA also had, except here it's more German cheap pils style then strong sugary lager. Not really an IPA, and it's a bit dusty and nasty, but could work as a more hopped cheap alternative, if it wwas not actually 1.60 euro. Meh.
