De Brabandere Brewery looks back on a rich history, and looks to the future with equal confidence. The dream cherished by founder Adolphe De Brabandere at the end of the nineteenth century when he laid the foundations for his brewery in Bavikhove has come to fruition in the successful company of today.
Our rich assortment of beers is enjoyed by connoisseurs far beyond our borders.

Brewing was, is, and will continue to be, an art at De Brabandere. For almost 25 years, between 1990 and 2014, the brewery bore the name Bavik.

2003 bottle. Blah, it pours well enough, bright red, with some peachy oranges and a large beige head on it. Aroma is disappointing. Light sweet candy, a hint of yeast and a syrupy caramel note. Flavor is lightly sweet with some dry almost astringent notes, light cherry flavored sweetness, a touch of roasty earthiness from the hops and no real interesting flavors to speak of. Body is medium and very carbonated, though not in a sharp way, it just seems very aerated. Should have let it sit for a while and breath, but I doubt it would have made much different, the flavor was just dull and uninteresting. Poured mine out.

Hazy, more orange than yellow; yellowish, very dense head. Spicey, peppery nose, going to pure lemon aroma. Very faint coriander. Sweet taste, flour or dough-like. Coriander, medicinal flavours. Citrus retronasal, yeasty afterflavours. Light to medium bodied. Not very pleasing. 'Nother wit, 'nuff said.

This was the first wit I really fell back when I was really into wits. That phase has passed now. +++ Sampled from an 11.2 oz can this brew pours a pale yellow color with a medium sized white head that left decent lacing. Very cloudy with lots of sediment. A light scent that is sweet and spicy with some citrus definitely coming through. Light lemon flavor. Very mild wheat taste. Just a hint of spice. Medium length finish. A nice and refreshing wit

The aroma is dominated by citrus. The color is an unclear yellow and it has a fine head. The flavor is complex with notes of citrus, malt, corriander, youghurt and yeast. I don't like the youghurt sourness in a beer.

Bottle, BBE 17/8/2008 Sparkling, blond body. Frothy, white head, which is fairly lacing and mostly lasting. Hoppy (citrus) aroma. Spicy and hoppy flavour. Bitter, sweet initial flavour, quite dominated by the alcoholic flavours. Bitter-sweet finish, alcoholic mouthfeel.

Bottle - Poured a red brown beer with a nice huge head with above standard retention. Carbonation is great with floral aroma. Medium body with sweet taste. A bit disappointed with that one, the spice mix is almost non-present and the body is too light with a bit of a watery aftertaste.

Poured a pale yellowish brew with a nice head with good retention. Good carbonation with hoppy aroma. Taste is sweet with subtle alcohol. Overall, this is a good beer but not as good as the Westmalle Triple or Fin du Monde.

Paid $1.50 for a 250ml bottle. (Petrus Oak Aged Dark Beer is what this is labled here). Dark amber in hue, with some floaters, no head. Looks like wine almost. Very stong alcohol scent... a little tiny bit smoked, but not much. Taste is sweetly bitter, but not beittersweet. Has a hint, but only a hint of smokiness, but also has a tangy raisen and earthy, woody, something taste. Not bad. It’s really growing on me. Mouth is a little thin, but it suits this particulra beer well. Glad I found it, it definitely wasn’t a waste of money.

Poured a dark red brew with a nice head. Aroma of cherry (probably from coming from the oak) with acidic taste. Body is a bit light and no complexity. I would have appreciated a bit more spice or aftertaste. Overall, this is a very average oud brun and I won't be seeking this one anytime soon.

Bavik Export from Brouwerij De Brabandere

A word about "Export" first. This disappearing style, used to be a variation on Pils. Usually less fermented (earlier pasteurisation) so the beer is sweeter and lower in ABV. But, in Belgium, the other main difference is that the beer is served in 33 cl, 'staid of the habitual 25 cl Pils. It has all but vanished, and most breweries today just fill 33cl of Pils. This is an exception. Dark gold; thick white, collapsing head, quite lacey. Herbal nose, even some hops - rest is predictably malty. Taste is sweet malt, clean & crisp. Faint corn taste. Slight slickness in mouthfeel, makes me think of corn again. Aftertaste gets more corn, as well as some sweet dough. As I said, apart from the hopnose, very predictable. It is very good in its style - but nowhere exciting.
