Hazy orange with a fluffy off-white head. Delicious hop aroma, most notably peach, apricot and pine. Background of pineapple, and green leaves. The flavour is very bitter, bitter enough to make all others pale, including most IPAs. The bitterness is accompanied by a lovely fresh hop flavour, and just enough caramel sweetness to balance. Only a touch of chalky dry mouthfeel keeps the scores from going through the roof. Well done!

75 cL bottle. Pours dark brown with a collapsing brown head. Aroma is ginger, annis seed and roasted malt. Flavour holds a smooth chocolate note and a not too overempowering note of ginger. Light sweetness and quite acidic porterish roasted malt. Ends light spiced and sweet, with a roasted malt note.

Pretty nice straightforward IPA. Hop forward aroma, with a bit of green leafiness and some grapefruit but its not a very aggressive hop presence. Malts are definitely there, with a full multi-grain breadiness. Flavor very much the same, medium palate with good malt-hop balance, fresh citric hops, a touch of a tangerine hoppiness, balanced finish. Very clean fermentation profile. Deep orange huge with creamy head and lacing.

750 ml bottle. Beautiful, totally black body (maybe a gleam of reddish dark brown in front of a light bulb) with a huge brown head. Heavenly aroma of malt, hops and spices like vanilla, cardamom, cinnamon etc. Flavor is much as expected from the aroma mixed with nice, warming alcohol. This is pure Christmas concentrated in a bottle.

This looks a little scary. First pours from the 12.7 oz bottle which looks like a demented champagne bottle a nearly transparent, although slightly hazy deep ruby brown with a slim ring of slightly off white head and no visible carbonation. Smells real boozy, with heavy alcohol, pine tar, turpentine (not as bad as you’d think) all at the front of the nose with caramel and sugar malt at the back. Initial flavor is sticky sweet, caramelized malts, dark sugar almost like rum, hints of citrus fruits round it out. Finish is slightly sour and tart, with heat from the alcohol that goes to the stomach. Mikkeller set the bar so high for themselves with some of their other beers that I expected more out of this. This was a good barleywine, but missed the mark in terms of the complexity that the best barleywines have.
