Description
Arbor Brewing Company was founded by husband and wife team Matt and Rene Greff, who share a passion for beer and adventure. By their late 20’s, the Greffs had become disenchanted with their corporate gigs and soon after brewpubs were legalized in Michigan, they set about opening their own. They opened their doors in July, 1995 and became the first brewpub to open in Ann Arbor and only the fifth brewpub to open in Michigan’s fledgling industry.

With the brewpub humming along and craft beer continuing to gain momentum, Matt and Rene set their sights on opening a production brewery to increase production and open up state-wide distribution. As long-time Ypsilanti residents, the Greffs wanted to help spearhead the economic renaissance in their hometown, so they chose an old ware house in Ypsilanti’s historic district, at that time still a few blocks off the beaten path. Cornery Brewery opened to the public in 2006.The Corner Brewery quickly became a favorite local hangout, and by 2010 the brewery was bursting at the seams. So we set our sights on an ambitious $1 million expansion and green brewery renovation project. In addition to adding solar panels to the roof and geothermal cooling underground, the project doubled the amount of car parking, tripled the amount of bike parking, added 2,200 new warehouse and office space, doubled the brewing capacity, and increased the bottling speed 5 fold. This renovation set the stage for continued growth.

In May of 2017, Arbor Brewing Company was purchased by Farm + Ferment, a Michigan-based farm and hospitality group which also includes Bigalora Wood Fired Cucina, Bacco Ristorante, Michigan Hop Alliance, and Baia Estate. The new ownership group continues the entrepreneurial spirit started by Matt and Rene, and brings synergies and growth opportunities with their hop farm and vineyard, both located on the Leelanau Peninsula. We again set out on another round of renovations and upgrades including a new kitchen at the brewpub, a new lab and production equipment at the brewery, and culminating at the end of 2017 with the installation of new, state-of-the-art canning line.

On tap at ABC Microbrewery. A clear golden beer with a white head. Aroma is pickle-y. Also tastes like pickle, but the cucumber, lime, and salt are recognizeable as forming that briney pickle taste. I feel like there's dill in there even, though the description makes no mention of such a thing. It's light on the palate so there's no unwelcome aftertaste; there's just a light pickle finish. Perhaps a beer that tastes like a pickle shouldn't work, but they got the palate just right so that it does. They really thought this one through.

12 ounce bottle into tulip glass, bottled on 9/22/2017. Pours lightly hazy/cloudy medium orange/amber color with a 1-2 finger dense and rocky off white head with great retention, that reduces to a nice cap that lasts. Nice thick soapy lacing clings around the glass, with a fair amount of streaming carbonation. Aromas of big tangerine, grapefruit, peach, pineapple, passion fruit, papaya, mango, melon, guava, berry, lemon/orange zest, light pepper/pine, caramel, toasted biscuit, herbal, and floral/grassy earthiness. Damn nice aromas with great balance and complexity of citrus/fruity/tropical hops and moderate dark/bready malt notes; with great strength. Taste of big tangerine, grapefruit, peach, pineapple, passion fruit, papaya, mango, melon, guava, berry, lemon/orange zest, light pepper/pine, caramel, toasted biscuit, herbal, and floral/grassy earthiness. Light-moderate pine, citrus peel, grassy, spicy bitterness on the finish. Lingering notes of tangerine, grapefruit, peach, pineapple, passion fruit, papaya, mango, melon, guava, berry, lemon/orange zest, light pepper/pine, caramel, toasted biscuit, and herbal/floral/grassy earthiness on the finish for a while. Great complexity, robustness, and balance of citrus/fruity/tropical hops and moderate dark/bready malt flavors; with an awesome malt/bitterness balance, and zero astringent hop flavors after the finish. Light-moderate increasing dryness from bitterness. Medium carbonation and body; with a very smooth, moderately creamy/bready/sticky, and slightly resinous/rindy balanced mouthfeel that is great. Zero warming alcohol as expected of 6.2%. Overall this an excellent IPA! All around great complexity, robustness, and balance of citrus/fruity/tropical hops and moderate dark/bready malt flavors; very smooth and easy to drink with the mellowly bitter/drying finish. Really spot on Midwest style IPA. Very juicy and dank hops; nice malty backbone, without being sweet/heavy feeling. A very enjoyable offering, loved the hop profile.

12 ounce bottle into tulip glass, bottled on 6/28/2017. Pours lightly hazy pale golden/yellow color with a 1 finger dense white head with good retention, that reduces to a thin cap that lingers. Light spotty lacing clings on the glass, with a light amount of streaming carbonation. Aromas of huge cucumber; with some lemon, lime, pear, apple, wheat, cracker, herbal, and yeast earthiness. Nice and pleasant aromas; way too strong on cucumber, but not offensive. Taste of big lightly tart lemon, lime, cucumber, pear, apple, wheat, cracker, coriander, sea salt, herbal, and yeast earthiness. Light-moderate fruity/lactic tartness and light yeast/coriander spiciness on the finish. Lingering notes of tart lemon, lime, cucumber, pear, apple, wheat, cracker, coriander, sea salt, herbal, and yeast earthiness on the finish for a good bit. Great complexity, robustness, and balance of fruity/acidic yeast, coriander, salt, cucmber, lime, and moderate pale malt flavors; with a great malt/tartness balance, and zero puckering flavors after the finish. Lightly increasing dryness from tartness. Light-medium carbonation and body; with a very smooth, moderately bready/grainy/acidic, fairly saline, and lightly sticky balanced mouthfeel that is great. Zero warming alcohol as expected of 4.4%. Overall this is a delicious gose. All around nice complexity, robustness, and balance of fruity/acidic yeast, coriander, salt, cucmber, lime, and moderate pale malt flavors; very smooth and refreshing to drink with the mellowly tart/acidic/drying finish. Really well balanced classic gose and fruit/vegetable flavors; very flavorful for the low ABV. If the nose was more balanced, I’d have no complaints. A very enjoyable offering, and very nice style example.

12 ounce bottle into pint glass, bottled on 8/9/2016. Pours slightly hazy very dark brown color with a 1-2 finger dense khaki head with great retention, that reduces to a nice cap that lingers. Nice dense soapy lacing clings down the glass, with a fair amount of streaming carbonation retaining the cap. Fantastic appearance. Aromas of big caramel, brown sugar, toasted biscuit, and dark/brown breads; with lighter notes of toffee, nuttiness, chocolate, dark fruit, herbal, floral, and roast/toasted earthiness. Damn nice aromas with great balance and complexity dark/bready/light roasted malt and light-moderate earthy hop/fruity yeast notes; with great strength. Taste of big caramel, brown sugar, toasted biscuit, and dark/brown breads; with lighter notes of toffee, nuttiness, chocolate, dark fruit, herbal, floral, and roast/toasted earthiness. Light-moderate herbal/spicy hop and light roasted bitterness on the finish. Lingering notes of caramel, brown sugar, toasted biscuit, and dark/brown breads; with lighter notes of toffee, nuttiness, chocolate, dark fruit, herbal, floral, and roast/toasted earthiness on the finish for a while. Great complexity, robustness, and balance of dark/bready/light roasted malt and light-moderate earthy hop/fruity yeast flavors; with a great malt/bitterness balance, and zero cloying/astringent flavors after the finish. Light dryness from hop/roast bitterness, lightly increasing through the glass. Nicely clean on lager flavors, not too fruity/yeasty. Medium carbonation and body; with a very smooth, creamy/bready/grainy, and lightly sticky mouthfeel that is great. Zero warming alcohol as expected of 5.5%. Overall this is a delicious Dusseldorf altbier style. All around nice complexity, robustness, and balance of dark/bready/light roasted malt and light-moderate earthy hop/fruity yeast flavors; very smooth, clean, and easy to drink. Very rich and complex malt flavors, with balancing hops and restrained yeast fruitiness. Quite a bit darker in color than I would expect, but the flavors are spot on to style otherwise. A very enjoyable offering.

Yes, this is classified as a hefe but I beg to differ, it really comes across as a wheat ale. Unless this is an old bottle, and I can’t find a date code, it seems to really lack many of the civilized german hefe notes I have come to enjoy. When I opened it and poured it foamed all over the place, wew. Does have some wheaty banana in the nose, but you have to look for it. Yes, a little mor bitter than a hefe, I don’t think this is really as low as 15 IBU, much higher IMHO. Lots of sediment on the bottom of the bottle. I guess ths is someplace between a hefe and a wheat ale but certainly leaning towards wheat ale fer sure. Somewhat difficult in the end. Quite boozy.

Draft sample. I enjoy Jackhammer and love boy born barrel offerings, but I didn’t enjoy this beer. The sticky sweetness hid the bourbon.
