Description
Founded in 2012, we’re a craft microbrewery located in a historic 100-year-old bakery called The Bread Box on West 6th Street in Lexington, Kentucky. We brew and can our beer out of that location, and it’s sold at bars, restaurants, grocery stores, and liquor stores throughout the state of Kentucky (and across the river in Cincinnati, OH). We pride ourselves on the beers that we make and the impact we have on the communities we’re a part of.

We focus our brewing talents on a wide variety of beers – we produce and can styles ranging from our flagship West Sixth IPA, to our Pay it Forward Cocoa Porter. In our taprooms in downtown Lexington, we have 15-20 West Sixth varieties on tap, along with occasional special bottle releases from our Sixfold and Barrel-aged series. Now a team of more than 40, we focus on brewing beers with quality and creativity that we’re proud to serve to our friends, and most importantly, that we like to drink!

That said, we measure our success as a company not just on the beer that we make, but also on our social impact in the communities we’re a part of. We support the direct work of nonprofits in our area through programs like our Pay it Forward program and 6th for a Cause. We are environmentally conscious in everything we do (did you know nationwide, 70% of aluminum is recycled and only 20% of glass is?). And finally, we strive to be an awesome place to work, offering discounted CSA (Community Supported Agriculture) benefits, private staff yoga classes, and employee ownership.

Can. Deep brown body with a frothy tan head that rapidly diminishes. Aroma of roasted malt, cocoa, light metallic, ash, earthiness. The flavor is moderately sweet and lightly bitter. It finishes lightly to moderately sweet and lightly bitter. Medium body, watery/sticky texture, lively carbonation. A bit of a chalky finish. Taste of roasted coffee and chocolate.

Re-rate on tap at Gambrinus. Tap is just a bit fruitier and cleaner than the can. This is one of the best beers from West Sixth. Can from Discount. Pours a clearish honey gold with a finger of foam that lingers. Dank, fresh green nose with some resin and overripe orange juice. Catpiss and New Zealand hop-like character shines...stinky tropical with a touch of earth. Clean and crisp on the palate, balanced malt. Light weed and catpiss. Bitter finish. Definitely one of the more modern styles of beer from West Sixth. Diggin’ this a lot. --- Beer merged from original tick of Pennyrile Pale Ale on 11 Dec 2016 at 16:53 - Score: 7. Can from West Side (canned October 2015). Pours a deep brown to black with a small brown head. Deep roasted cacao, treacle notes with some Nutella and light soy sauce. Some baker’s chocolate bitterness still in the finish. Hides the booze well for 7%. Holds up pretty well, will re-rate a fresh one when I can grab one. --- Beer merged from original tick of Pay It Forward Cocoa Porter on 08 Nov 2016 at 17:11 - Score: 7. Re:rate: Tap at Maloney’s. Pours a clearish gold with a finger of white foam that lingers. Big orange and tangerine notes on the nose. Super refreshing with with citrus. Thankfully the pine notes are a bit muted. Lingering orange. Tap at CYO Brewing. Caramel, pine, honey and a bit of orange zest on the nose. Some grapefruit character as it warms. Medium body. Fairly bitter finish. Solid NW-style IPA, but a little old school for me. That being said, fairly easy drinking. --- Beer merged from original tick of IPA on 27 Oct 2016 at 22:34 - Score: 7. Original review text: Solid straightforward IPA. Caramel, pine and citrus. Classic and tasty. --- Beer merged from original tick of IPA on 31 Dec 2016 at 16:02 - Score: 7. Original review text: Very different beer on tap. Good punchy orange citrus with faint pine notes. Good malt backbone, but it sits neatly behind the hops. Solid. --- Beer merged from original tick of IPA on 12 Mar 2017 at 21:17 - Score: 7. Original review text: Solid IPA. Thanks Justin!
