Tap at Barley. Not sure if this is a porter or a black IPA. Is there a difference really? Big hoppy nose, lots of grapefruit and lemon. Licorice, light pine and mint, chocolate. Dry coffee and dark chocolate flavour, wood, roast, light hops but still citrus and grass come through. Harsh bitter and roasty finish. A bit rough. Interesting but needs some refinement.

Dark brown color. Nice roasty mouth feel but I think it could have more roasted character. Med full bodied. Big hoppy bitter finish. Very surprising

Bottle from Tanakaya, Tokyo. Pale golden colour with a small white head. Aroma of malts, fruit, citrus. Flavour is fruity, citric.

Bottle from Tanakaya, Tokyo. Amber colour with a small brown head. Sweet fruity, berry aroma. Flavour is hops, tropical fruit.

Can (thanks Kim S.!). Very deep brown colour, small brown head. Aroma is very nutty, mild roast, some coffee as well as some slight toffeeish notes. Flavour is roasted malts, coffee, quite strong on the nutty notes, and mild hoppy notes as well. Long nutty and roasted aftertaste.

Draught at the Keyaki Hiroba Autumn Festival 2012. Very malty nose, light citrus, grass, lots of cereal. Grainy, cereal flavor, very earthy, grassy. Bitter finish. Great balance and malt character. Very toasty. Their homegrown unmalted barley makes a strong impression.

Draught at the Keyaki Hiroba Autumn Festival 2012. Spicy Cascade hop nose, dry, earthy, a bit of citrus. Light malt, some bread and cereal. Great hoppy flavor, fresh and green, wonderful. Toast, grass, hay, citrus. Excellent wet-hopped IPA

Bossa Nova IPA from Oh! La! Ho

Draught at Kamikaze. Citrus nose, grapefruit and orange. Dark gold, clear, with a light head. Flavors of orange, grass, cream. Rather sweet but has a nice bitterness as well. Peppery, with sweet orange and a bit of grapefruit. Very drinkable. Nice body—rich but light. Good beer.

light Golden color. Far from an ipa, this is the best pale ale in japan. 4.5% abv 60 ibu. Full bodied, uber well balanced. Lot of hoppy notes, but not overly bitter. Dry. Seriously well executed. Wow. This is a must drink if you can find it.

Can at Nagano Sake Village. Actually, not sure if this is a seasonal or not. It was in one of their regular cans, not the Raiden seasonal ones. soft, nice citrus hop aroma, grapefruit, sweat, light malt with a bit of caramel. Flavor is caramel, citrus hops, minerals. Nice balance. Nicely drinkable and tasty with a light hop finish. A standard American PA.
