About
Brewing ceased in early 2026. It's currently unclear if the tap only beers will still be brewed at another brewery of the company or if they will be discontinued.

The name “von Hövel” in Dortmund has stood for first-class brewing art for centuries. In 1518 the patrician family acquired the brewing rights on the Hövel-Hof am Hohen Wall, where Wilhelm von Hövel finally founded today's Hövels brewery in 1854. In search of the perfect beer, in 1893 he developed a mashing process with a particularly long ripening time. The result: a lean, but full-bodied beer specialty, rich in complex aromas.

Even today we feel committed to the tradition of always looking for the best, and thanks to our art of brewing, we impressively demonstrate this with new beer specialties, both in the Ruhr area and in the far north.

0.75 l growler from the brewery, filled yesterday. Almost clear, dark reddish amber with a medium large, dense, almost stable, off-white head. Sweetish-malty, slightly fruity aroma of caramel, sultanas, some grains and traces of chocolate. Fairly sweet, malty, moderately bitter, slightly fruity taste of caramel, sultanas, nuts, some chocolate and a touch of grains, followed by a short, gently bitter, minimally grassy-spicy finish. Medium to full body, very smooth and slightly creamy mouthfeel, soft carbonation. Superbly balanced Bock, rather sweet but with some aromatic hops in the finish, super smooth as well. Not very spectacular taste-wise, but very pleasant overall. Very nice beer, really well-brewed, seems like Hövels have really stepped up their game.

Keg at the brewpub. Cloudy dark golden with a medium off white head. Aroma had light toasted malt, biscuit and subtle floral notes. Over the palate came light toasted malt, a hint of caramel, subtle floral hops and bread. Finished dry with light bitterness.

I don't usually pay 1.19€ for an Altbier, but this one looked so fancy I had to. Pretty good.

Quite sweet, malty, moderately bitter, rather roasty taste of caramel, coffee, dark chocolate, toasted hazelnut and traces of licorice, followed by a short, gently roasty-bitter, slightly dry finish.
