Description
Islay Ales was founded by Paul Hathaway, Paul Capper and Walter Schobert in 2004. The brewery has a 4 barrel brewing plant that produces all their ales in cask and bottle-conditioned format; therefore, the beers are never pasteurised or filtered.

In July 2018 Donald MacKenzie and Mackay Smith - ''The Islay Boys'' - took over the brewery with one goal in mind: to reconquer the hearts and minds - and tastebuds! - of the good people of Islay, and of course the many visitors to the island, by brewing straightforward, taste-upfront beers. We rely on experience, taste and aroma to guide our brewing process.

Bitter from the Islay brewery, amber coloured, bit earthy and citrussy character, some grassy hops in the finish, dryish profile, slight hint of saltiness, thin mouthfeel. Rather bland, I had many a better ale in this style.

Scottish bitter apparently based on their Finlaggan Ale, but a bit darker, more toasty maltiness, a bit woody and mineral-like, bit thin mouthfeel, smooth. Should re-rate this as this is done from memory and it’s been a long time.

Bottle from the Scottish Real Ale shop. Appearance - dark autumnal red with a fawn head. Nose - biscuits with honey and a citrus and herb note. Taste - tart red fruit and astringent malt. Palate - close to medium bodied with a tangy texture and a long dry but slightly astringent finish. Overall - Appearance and Nose great but then if dropped away.

50cl bottle from the Scottish Real Ale shop. Appearance - a lovely amber colour with a nice lacy head. Nose - mostly toffee but just a hint hint of herbs or pine. Taste - honey and wholemeal bread. A wee citrus kick at the end. Palate - medium bodied with a creamy texture but just a hint of malt astringency on the finish. Overall - good beer but pleasure slightly reduced by the mildly astringent finish.
