Description
Islay Ales was founded by Paul Hathaway, Paul Capper and Walter Schobert in 2004. The brewery has a 4 barrel brewing plant that produces all their ales in cask and bottle-conditioned format; therefore, the beers are never pasteurised or filtered.

In July 2018 Donald MacKenzie and Mackay Smith - ''The Islay Boys'' - took over the brewery with one goal in mind: to reconquer the hearts and minds - and tastebuds! - of the good people of Islay, and of course the many visitors to the island, by brewing straightforward, taste-upfront beers. We rely on experience, taste and aroma to guide our brewing process.

Mixed 12 set from Rakuten. Bottle. While it is listed as a bitter but it is made with pale & wheat malts. A fruity mildly spiced aroma, thick eggshell white fluffy head on a slightly cloudy mellow gold body. Nice full mouthfeel but the flavor has a bit of a bitter astringency to it. Fruity at frist, then an odd bitter flavor that leaves behind a somewhat chalky aftertaste. It is an odd tasting beer...

Bottle at the GJBF 2013 Osaka. A dark maroon color, nice looking. Some smokiness but a two-dimensional beer which is a bit rough. Not bad, an ok bitter. A bottle at home from rakuten, slightly sour, rough taste, it seems to have gone off...the color is still great and so is the body/head but it seems somewhat oxidized or something. Definitely the worse for wear. In this condition I’d give it a 2.5...

4.4% bottle at the GJBF Osaka 2013. A classic smokey dark ale aroma with a light tan head on a beautiful dark brown body. The flavor is kind of generally smokey with no balance to it. Kind of average with a very bitter finish. Not really my thing, interesting but not my style. On the bitter side with a bit of smokiness.

Bottled. Nutty, roasty nose with soy, chocolate, light berry fruit, smoke. Black with a tan, lacy head. Dry minerally flavor, very little sweetness, light wheat. Bitter, dry, finish. Very interesting. Nose and taste quite different.

Bottle at the brewery. It pours clear amber with a thick white head. The nose is wood, leather, grain and light spice. The taste is wood, leather, earth, light bitterness and spice with a dry finish. Medium body and moderate carbonation. A pretty reasonable and drinkable bitter by all accounts.

Cask at The Schooner Bar, Bowmore. It pours clear golden yellow with pretty much no head (not a good start). The nose is grain, dough, earth and porridge. The taste is grainy, odd sweetness, very dusty, caramel, hay, soap and chemical toilets with a dry finish. Medium body and low carbonation. Difficult to stomach. Pretty nasty really all-round, I was unable to get past a few sips.

Bottle on the Calmac ferry to Islay. It pours black with a thick beige head. The nose is roasted malt, ash, earth, coffee grinds and a hint of smoke in the background. The taste is roasted malt, well-done toast, earth, pepper, liquorice, cola, tar and a tour of sourness with a crisp, dry finish. Medium body and moderate carbonation. Robust and well balanced. Islay Ales best beer most probably.

The taste is earth, peat, smoke, hay, medicinal notes, TCP, sweet fruit, tangy berry and a touch of alcohol with a dry finish. Medium body and moderate carbonation. Good depth of flavour. This is Islay ales most interesting beer to date.

Bottle from Islay Ales. It pours darkest mahoganny with a medium beige head. The nose is ginger, cinnamon, Xmas pudding, light roast, coffee, faint malt vinegar and aniseed. The taste is sour malt, cola, ginger ale, cinnamon, roasted malt, sherbet, dark fruit and charcoal with a dry, earthy finish. Medium body and moderate carbonation. Interesting... not sure that the light sourness should be there, but drinks quite well at the mo.
