In July 2018 Donald MacKenzie and Mackay Smith - ''The Islay Boys'' - took over the brewery with one goal in mind: to reconquer the hearts and minds - and tastebuds! - of the good people of Islay, and of course the many visitors to the island, by brewing straightforward, taste-upfront beers. We rely on experience, taste and aroma to guide our brewing process.

Sample from bottle at the brewery. Appearance - amber with a slim lacy head. Nose - dried fruit, light citrus, spicy malt. Taste - it comes out quite vinous and spicy. We’re getting into Old Ale characterics here. Palate - close to medium bodied with a tangy texture and a long dry tangy finish. Overall - completely different from the usual Ardnave.

Bottle at the Jurancon Hotel in Craighouse. Appearance - deep brown with a lovely fluffy head. Nose - sweet malt, light toffee and nuts. Taste - like cereal saturated in milk. More of the light toffee note. Palate - light to medium bodied with a creamy texture and a fairly good finish. Overall - I’d say this was more in the Scottish Ale style than Bitter. Solid enough.

Bottle at the Old Kiln Cafe at Ardbeg distillery. Appearance - Nose - floral but sweet oak and whisky notes in there too. Taste - the spirit and oak flavours definitely dominate the floral notes. Palate - close to medium bodied with a creamy texture and a fairly good finish. Overall - as far as a whisky aged bitter or golden ale goes this is quite a good example. I would question whether sticking a blonde beer in a spirit barrel was the best plan on outset however. It definitely suits a stout better.

Bottle at the Kilchoman brewery bar. Nose - orange fruit and big peat smoke note. Taste - the peat smoke totally dominates the orange fruit. Palate - light to medium bodied with a drying, smoky sensation Overall - the peat smoke was a bit much with the orange fruit but at least interesting.

50cl bottle @PBF XI. Pours black in color with a thick brown head. That same thin peaty aroma as in the other one from this brewery. Acidic, roasty malty flavor with some ash and pear.

Bottle 50cl. Poured into a tumbler. Clear deep amber, small frothy beige head, mostly diminishing, light lacing; aroma toasted malts, caramel, bread, woody notes; taste is medium sweet and bitter, malty, toffee, average duration, dry and toasted malts finish; medium body, oily texture, soft carbonation; perhaps bit thin but on the whole a pleasant bitter.

(bottle, courtesy of pivnizub) Dark brown to black coloured hue with a brown mid-sized foamy head. Roasted malty aroma with notes of coffee, dark chocolate, leather, as well as a tinge of grassy hops. Roasty bitter flavour, light bodied with a calm carbonation. Dry roast-malt character with loads of coffee and dark chocolate; dry and bitter finish joined by a moderate level of sourness. Not particularly rounded but still likeable. 03.II.16

Bottle(picked up @Manufactum Waltrop): Literally black, mid-sized creamy tanned head, that slowly collapses; dry toasty-roasty nose, traces of bitter chocolate and - maybe - hints of caramel; dry and solid bitter flavour, a subdued sweetness is barely detectable, indeed; not too light bodied; lingering and astonishingly soft bitter roasty finish, some malty spots work as a counterweight. Nice brew…
