Bottle at Cardinal. Caramel, malt, sweetness and some hops in the aroma. The flavor is quite malty and sweet, with hops coming stronger towards the finish, which is quite hoppy and pleasant. There’s something pleasant about this beer that I couldn’t get, but maybe it’s just that. Pleasant that is. (070623)

Cask at the Llandoger Trow, Bristol 20/8/07. Bright amber colour with next to no head. Sweet, fruity aroma. Flavour of caramel with a slightly bitter finish. A lot more bland than the old, stronger version.

Nitro can. Sweet smell of malt. Reddish tinged amber color with a creamy beige head. Very smooth, starts with some malt, but bitter comes forward for balance. The impression is very nice. The finish is mellow, not very dry, and with enough bitter to satisfy an Englishman. Or me. Rerate: Tap at Fox and Goose. It’s going up from 3.2.

Cask-conditioned at the Elephant & Castle, Amwell, Herts May 2006. Forgettable copper bitter. Fruity flavour and aroma, with not much of a finish. Inoffensive but bland.

50 cL can. Pours light brown/amber with a lacing off-white head. Caramel malty aroma with a minor roasted note. Medium bodied. Malty flavour, well balanced with the bitterness. Caramel, slight sweet and with slight special hops twist. Nice, but not my favourite style.

Nitro tin. Poured amber with creamy white head. Aroma of hops and sweet malt, fruit. Mild bitterness, with malty flavour. Thin body, not much depth, not much going on here. Not a beer to rave about, but a good starter beer if you’ve been drinking Castle all your life.

Casked. Pale golden/orange colour with mediumsized bubbly/foamy white head. Aroma is fruits along with some caramel malts and fresh wooden hints. Flavour is bittery fruity along with some hints of malts and wood.

Pours deep, dark amber into an English pint. Fluffy off-white pancake batter head with excellent retention. Caramel aromas. Creamy fruity caramel upfront with a dry, crisp bitter metallic finish. Not fond of the metal -- thought it would subside as it warmed...

Bottle can’t remember where I got this it’s been kicking about for some time. Poured copper in colour with white head, hoppier aroma than I anticipated, taste was pleasantly malty bitterness was also ok, not bad.

Cask at the Red Lion, Sandiacre, Nottinghamshire - 4.5%. Pale chestnut colour with an off-white head; malty aroma; rich, sweet and cremay in the mouth, with orange fruit and a touch of spice; leading to a soft but powerful bitter finish - real iron fist in a kid glove style.
