Small thin head that rides over a clear, dark brown body. Sweet rasiny aroma and flavor with little body. Moderate diacetyl. O.k. but this wasn’t half as good as the Appalacian Pale Ale that I switched to for my next one.

Bottle Pours a dark, nearly black witha small tan head and thick even lacing. Classic dark roasted aroma with some coffee and a littel of that porter sourness/twang. Flavor is a mild woody flavor. Not nearly as much of that smokey, charcoal flavor as the aroma hinted at. Rather pale tasting for the style witha pulpy, almost grassy trailer. Very littel hoppiness or biterness. Soft carbonation. Thanks to Ohiodad for this one

Wow. Just wow. I can hardly put my thoughts in to words on this one. I start laughing when I think how bad this is. We tried this beer and just started laughing at how disgustingly bad it is. Not only is it watery and macro swill tasting, but it takes that a step further and has an offensive flavor of what paint thinner smells like. Body is a shade deeper than Sleeman Clear. No head.

On draught at Calhouns Feb 2005. Light straw to pale-golden color, rapidly fizzling head. Smells sour again (why do all of their beers smell sour?) with a hint of pils malt, just a hint. Flavor is a mix of honey, almonds and corn, which isnt tremendously appetizing. Light astringent bitterness on the end, very watery. Slightly sharp carbonation, but it dies off quickly. Should be reclassified as a "Pale Lager".

On draught Feb 2005 at Calhoun’s (not the Bearden hill location, but the one right on the river). Hmm, this looks overated. It does have a good auburn-brown color, but the head quickly fizzles and it is terribly clear and kind of looks like it was water with food coloring splashed in. Smells of cheap sour-like yeast, cheap sticky sweet syrupy corn and cheap malt. No hops. The aroma can at least be smelled, but it sure isnt very pleasant. Gross corn syrup flavor, just foul tasting. Watery at the end. I was only able to drink half of my pint over the whole course of dinner. Barf.

Bottle purchased at Hop and Leaf February 2005. Filtered brown color, which after pouring, quickly becomes a transparent brownish-mahogany with some light garnet highlights on the edges. At first there is some cream/yellow head, but it quickly fades to nothing. Aroma, ah what’s this, a slightly promising aroma? There is definite, though muted smoke in there (light wood, charcoal, burnt coffee) with some light choco-caramel tones and perhaps a touch of yeast. Flavor, unfortunately, dosent keep up with the aroma and I’m left with a watery smoked-water sort of concoction with little to no malt substance to it and a horribly thin and watery body. Actually, I wasnt left with it, the grass that I poured it on was.

2004 bottle from Hop and Leaf. First of all let’s clear things up, Helles beer, by definition does NOT have little flavor to talk about. It is supposed to have a light body, not light on the flavor. My pour was clear and filtered looking, weak golden-yellow, whispy white head, mostly dissipating. Could stand to have a good deal more head retention, less filtration and a darker burnished copper hue to it. Aroma of lightly sour yeast, lightly toasted grains and some corn-like notes, though that may just be the yeast. Flavor is of a very apparent German sour yeast, with notes of pils malt (honey) and a some lightly stale apple flavor on the finish. Fairly crisp as well. Lightly watery with low hops apparency. Could stand a good deal more malt. Just because this is a light colored lager, dosent mean it has to be light flavored. Some of the most flavorful beers I’ve had have been from this style. If they would market this as a plain American pale lager, I would be more impressed. This dosent cut it for a beer of this style.

I had this one several times on tap and there were some inconsistencies. At it’s best, it is a very well made Hefe. Thick head, cloudy golden yellow with a good amount of banana/clove aromatics. On one ocaision, it was flat and lifeless, with no head and an oilyness to it.

A black beer with a collapsing brown head. The of butteracid, roasted malt, as well as hints of chocolate. The flavor also contains butteracid, roasted malt, and chocolate, besides hints of coffee.

This pours a nice pale gold color that supports a nice head. Malt aroma behind a good, strong, floral hop forground. Starts off sweet and ends with a satisfying hoppy bitter dryness in the finish. I’d like to see this one become one of the regular offerings.
