New beer by d'Oude Maalderij, a standard Belgian blonde commissioned by 'brouwerij' Rosseel in honour of the city of Izegem, which has a historical tradition of pitch production ('pekken'), hence the name. Bottle from the Beer Shop in Kontich. Medium thick, off-white, regularly shaped, lightly lacing head, thickly moussy around the edge but dissolving slowly in the middle, over an initially very lightly hazy, warm orange blonde beer with ochre-ish tinge which becomes more outspoken with sediment (as the beer turns cloudy). Aroma is unfortunately ruined by a truckload of off-putting DMS (sulfuric, overcooked green cabbage), overwhelming much more elegant impressions of pineapple, orange peel, dusty old coriander seed, bread crust, red apple, camomile, hard butterscotch candy, banana but also leek soup and pumpkin flesh. Fruity onset, bit estery, hinting at sweeter peach and banana alongside apple peel and unripe pear, lightly sourish in a 'natural', neutral way; carbonation is medium, mouthfeel soft and slick. Mild bread crust-like maltiness in the middle, cereally with sharper grainy edges, while the fruit aspects subtly linger and some spicy phenols show up in the end; the DMS returns retronasally, but luckily less agressively so than expected based on the nose. Ends mildly phenolic, malty and generously hop bitter, in a rooty, floral, leafy way, with the spicy bitterness lingering for quite a long time, quenching the thirst; quite a lot of dry-sweet-spicy coriander seed as well, coupled with a refreshing dried orange peel aspect. Easygoing, accessible, ordinary, coriandered Belgian blonde with more hop bitterness (and less banana) than average but otherwise clearly a commissioned beer directed at the average Belgian beer consumer; I would have given this a significantly higher score for its well-placed juiciness, spiciness and hoppiness, if it weren't for that strong presence of DMS, something I thoroughly dislike and is relatively easy to avoid, especially by a crafty, creative brewer like this one, sorry Jef!

Tasting glass draft @ Billie’s Bier Kafétaria. Red amber hay, big creamy tanned, light tanned head. Nose is iron sweet sticky painfully metallic, malt syrup, cheap & poor strawberry jam. Taste is unpleasantly metallic, syrup, weeds, spoiled fruit, way too soap, chemical, thin unpleasantly metallic, really got worse the more I drank of it, sounded fair on paper but the spoiled, empty metallic sweetness of it was a real mess.

22/XII/17 - 33cl bottle @ Kantien (Gent) - BB: n/a (2017-2226)

Clear red brown beer, creamy irregular yellowish small head, unstable, non adhesive. Aroma: very malty, grains, red fruits, some strawberry flavoured bubble gum, bit herbal. MF: soft carbon, medium body. Taste: very malty start, unpleasant bitterness, lots of tannins, banana peel, very bitter. Aftertaste: rotten fruits, rotten red berries, banana peel, very unpleasant brew, really don't like this one. Well, that's € 5.50 down the drain for nothing... Had better bought it at Geers, if it's only to throw it out after less than half a glass.
