Description
Hardywood officially began its mission to brew with purpose in late 2011 as one of only two craft breweries in the city of Richmond. Our original brewhouse and taproom was a vacant warehouse discovered in a long-forgotten neighborhood known nearly a century prior as Richmond’s German Brewing District. Hardywood has been drawing new life to this forgotten area one draft pour at a time. We now operate a 20-barrel brewhouse and taproom in the original location, as well as a 60-barrel brewhouse and destination brewery in the West Creek area of Richmond, right on the border of Goochland County.
Today, Hardywood continues to develop and deliver on its mission with a sharp focus on brewing quality, sourcing local, environmental stewardship, community engagement, and giving back.

Draft at Rustico Ballston. This one poured a near pitch black color with little more than a wispy, small tan head to it. Aroma was some light spices, roasted and sweet malt characters, and what appears to be gingerbread, lots of boozy notes - oak barrel. Flavor is still strong with the holiday spices - lots of dried fruits, bourbon character is perhaps a bit subdued compared to fresh, but it’s still there. Lots of booze. Enjoyable, pretty smooth, just a touch rough. Hope to try this one again when it’s released at the end of the year.

Draft at Rustico Ballston. Pours a dark brownish black with tan head. Aromas of bourbon, ginger, mint, cinnamon. Tasting notes of bourbon, ginger, cinnamon, dark chocolate. Medium-full body with a dry finish. Bourbon notes seems to have faded compared to when I had this fresh at the Hardywood release. --- Beer merged from original tick of Bourbon GBS (Gingerbread Stout) on 25 Dec 2025 at 03:36 - Score: Appearance - 9 | Aroma - 9 | Flavor - 9 | Texture - 9 | Overall - 9.
