Description
Hardywood officially began its mission to brew with purpose in late 2011 as one of only two craft breweries in the city of Richmond. Our original brewhouse and taproom was a vacant warehouse discovered in a long-forgotten neighborhood known nearly a century prior as Richmond’s German Brewing District. Hardywood has been drawing new life to this forgotten area one draft pour at a time. We now operate a 20-barrel brewhouse and taproom in the original location, as well as a 60-barrel brewhouse and destination brewery in the West Creek area of Richmond, right on the border of Goochland County.
Today, Hardywood continues to develop and deliver on its mission with a sharp focus on brewing quality, sourcing local, environmental stewardship, community engagement, and giving back.

Surprised I hadn't rated this. 16oz can pours a thick black with very little beige head. Nose has malt and lots of cinnamon and brown sugar, big nutmeg too. Flavor has actually of brown sugar and malt and cinnamon and nutmeg. Full, sweet finish.

Copper coloured body with a thick, three centimetre tall off-white and tan head. Aroma of chewy malts with some toffee, caramelised sugars, earth and a tiny bit of blackberries, but these are pretty mild. Light to Medium-bodied; Strong earthy and nutty malts show at first with a dash of caster sugar and some fructose here, but not much in the way of actual blackberry flavours, and almost no hops at all here - a hint of floral notes near the end, with some mild spices towards the finish as well. Aftertaste shows a good malt kick with that hint of sugars, but not much blackberries (or any other fruit) flavour with some soft sugars and a hit of bread and pure yeast near the end. Overall, a decent, but very underwhelming and simplistic beer without much of the key ingredient here (at least in terms of taste/smell) - Blackberries. I sampled this sixteen ounce, pint-sized can, purchased from Costco in Arlington (Pentagon City), Virginia on 20-August-2021 for US$2,99 sampled while walking the streets of New York, New York with my family on 03-December-2021, as beer #3 of my Advent Calendar for 2021.

16oz can pours a fairly dark black, decent viscosity, swirling off white head. Nose has a ton of ginger and honey, toast and roast is also there, other muddled baking spices, some brown sugar. Flavor leads and lingers with ginger, chewy malt and molasses, cookie for sure. Full bodied, but honestly the ginger cuts the sugary and the booze.
