Description
Glen Affric Brewery started brewing in November 2016, but our story goes way back.

While working in Shanghai, co-founder Craig McCormick and his father, Trevor got caught up in China’s craft beer movement. Blown away by the range of modern brewing, Craig joined the team at China’s top craft brewery, Shanghai Boxing Cat Brewery and learned his trade. After further ‘research’ trips to San Diego, the dream of the family brewery started to take shape.

That brewery became Glen Affric, a beautiful part of Scotland where the McCormick family have a long-time family home. Premises were bought in the picturesque village of Cannich, Glen Affric and planning permissions submitted for redevelopment there. While this was in process further premises were secured in substantial brand new units in Birkenhead, close to the family’s base on the Wirral.

Returning to the UK in 2016, and with brother Calum and mother Alison coming on board, the family started with a pilot 500-litre brewhouse, balancing experimental beers with a focus on a core range of delicious, highly sessionable West Coast styles. For the first nine months, local demand meant beers rarely escaped the taproom, but with a significant increase in capacity, the brewery is now distributed and sold across the UK.

Can from the brewery. Appearance - bright orange to red. White head. Nose - blackberry, raspberry and cherry. Funky sour underlay. Taste - yep, blackberry and raspberry. The blackcurrant and strawberry even, sweetness. Haven't got the passionfruit yet, but I'm sure it's doing something. I was expecting more sour though. Palate - tangy and light to medium bodied. Dry, tangy finish. Overall - good, though it should be a bit more sour for the style.

Can from the brewery. Appearance - golden orange. Attractive white lacing. Nose - big orange note, possibly ripe melon or apricot too. Taste - more orange and melon. Palate - it's thinner than the nose implies. Tangy middle, light bodied, dry finish. Overall - good.

Can from the brewery. Appearance - hazy golden orange. A little darker in colour than the regular Loch & Load and wondering if that could be CBD, but not sure how/when it's added. Just a question? Thin but attractive white head. Nose - orange and lemon, but not getting the sweetcorn I got on the non-CBD version. Taste - more orange and slightly grainy. Palate - light bodied, dry finish. A little fuller in flavour and less bitter than the non-CBD version. Overall - good.

Can from the brewery. Appearance - deep amber, fawn head. Nose - toffee and hazelnuts. Light booze but not as much as expected. Taste - more of the same, toffee mainly with hazelnuts. Again, a lack of booziness. Palate - full bodied, creamy texture. Finish sweet! Overall - good.
