Description
Golden City Brewery was founded in 1993 by two geologists, Charlie & Janine Sturdavant. They filled the old machine shop behind their historic Golden home with used dairy tanks and Charlie began brewing German-style ales. The tasting room was originally located in the sunroom of their house and provided Red Ale and Pale Ale to the local community in half-gallon growlers and kegs. Since that time, the operation has expanded at the same location (still their home). The carriage house has become the tasting room, the backyard is the beer garden. The brewery is still in the machine shop, but a second level was added inside. All the old “frankenbrew” equipment has been replaced with real beer fermenters and a slightly used gas-fired kettle. The brewery produces those now legendary Red & Pale Ales, in addition to a few other brews.

A friend hauled this from the brewery to me. 22 oz bomber. Poured into a mug. Light golden color, however could not see thru the beer. Aroma is very nice, surprisingly. AA grassy, lager-like aroma. Mellow. The taste is basic pale, not off-putting. I guess this maybe a good session bee. Smooth finishes with no bitterness.

Got this thanks to a friend who delivered it to me from Golden. Beer pours with no head whatsoever and completely black. The aroma is very good, not overpowering. Smells like coffee and chocolate, and very prevalent but not la blast like a Peche Mortel. The rest is kind of down hill. The body is probably the lightest stout I have ever tasted. Maybe some people will find this good. The taste is very lacking. The taste is also very nothing and no palate at all. So if you are into a stout with lots of great aroma while being light on body and no taste then this is for you.

Bottle bought from the brewery and traveled all the way to NYC thanks to a friend. Pours with no head, as is the norm for a barley wine. The color is a very dark and murky brown, like a tea that has had the bag left in it for a few days. Cannot see through the beer. The smell is very potent, similiar to a fresh Samichlaus. Definite alcohol in the smell, that sweet alcohol aroma. The taste is middle level barley wine. Very bitter finish, with a strong alcoholic sweetness. This is got to be a very alcoholic beer, the bottle does not say but my guess is around 14% because of the similarity to a Samichlaus.

(draught) Deep red - tawny brown. Very slim ring figuring as head. Fruity (plums, grapes), estery, vinous, woody nose. Bitter-sweet-sourish taste, obvious very good balance; also between wood, fruityness (orange, grape/raisins). Ever so slightly oily mouthfeel. Alcohol is evident. This beer tastes as if aged in the wood. Slightly tart, fruity, and full mouthfeel keeps hanging around for a long time afterwards. Definitely a beer more than worth seeking out.

Great copper colour with nice ruby and orange highlights. A very, very dense thick light brown head. A fantastic smell: caramel, pit fruits (plums & prunes), raisins and malt all dominate the aroma. Full-bodied;strong flavoured beer: malt, raisins, alcohol. Palate is left completely reminiscent of all those flavours. Very pleasing, this barley wine brings out all of the nice musty dark essences and tastes that you'd expect. A great barley wine that I was glad to find available! Overall, tastes similar to any other top notch barley wine and is better than the average! Worth finding if you live in Colorado. I bought my 12 ounce bottle at Applejack Liqours in Denver, Colorado.
