Description
Northern Monkey Brew Co was founded in 2016 by Ryan Bailey and Liam Convey, with the addition of some Southern Flare in Kevin Barber a couple of years later. A passion for drinking real ale, that progressed into home brewing and then eventually "lets build a brewery!" Years of planning, building and practice runs followed and some seriously understanding partners. We have gained some fantastic local customers and continue to sell further and further afield, at present selling independently throughout the North West.

We have had some fantastic success at a local and National level, with multiple awards for our beers, notably SIBA National Silver in the dark beers category for our 6% Chocolate Treacle Porter, Underdog. We also boast CAMRA accolades including 2019 Bolton Winter Pub of the Season, 2020 Bolton Pub of the Year. 2019 saw the release of the cult hit, Film Club! Our incredibly unique but completely delectable popcorn stout.

Our aims and ambitions remain the same as the day we first started and that is to make great beer and take great pride in representing our Northern heritage, and of course to serve the greatest beers at our Brewery Tap.

Keg at Northern Monkey for their Best of Bolton festival. Mahogany, slightly translucent with a thin layer of beige head. The aroma has quite a lot of the promised rum along with some stone fruit and sarsaparilla, but there's a metallic edge as well that doesn't quite work. Taste is sweet and rum-laden if slightly artificial, with an increasing bitterness leading to an (again) metallic finish. Lots of carbonation. Doesn't really gel all that well with me. I wonder if the nuances of this beer would come out a little bit better in cask?

Handpull cask from the brewpub as part of their 'Best of Bolton' festival. Light golden, almost straw, clear with a tiny ring of white head and generous lacing. Aroma of white grapefruit find from the Citra hop, along with some vanilla and a slight vegetal note. Bittersweet taste with more vegetal character, with the bitter hop note increasing toward the finish. It's a bit messy, but certainly drinkable.

Handpull cask from the brewpub as part of their 'Best of Bolton' festival. Very dark brown, almost black, with a big beige head. Muted aroma, more chocolate/coffee than cherry, with some enticing dark malts. Taste is incredibly sweet with waves of booze-soaked black cherry on the tongue. There is some hoppy kickback near the finish but this beer is still very sweet. Lots more cherry in the aftertaste. Bullseye.

Half-pint on cask at Plau Gin & Beer House in Preston. Shared with Finn. Upper part lacing from a low white head, misty warm golden body. Hints of leafy hops on the nose. Malt-fruity flavours with notes of resinous bitterness to the finish. A bit thin on the swallow. Satisfying. (09.02.2019).
