[Cask at the Three Horseshoes, Marlow] Pours an attractive chestnut-red with a creamy head. Smells like it looks - rich, sweet and malty. The taste is therefore a bit of a disappointment. There is a hint of sweet treacley malt up front, but mainly it’s dry and woody. This is not bad in itself, but what kills the beer for me is the harsh metallic bitterness which destroys the flavour. I would think that there may have been something wrong with the delivery of the beer if I hadn’t tried it in the brewery tap, which is a Good Beer Guide-listed pub and one where I’ve never had any problems. Maybe it was just a bad batch, but this is certainly the worst I’ve had from Rebellion, although I see my view is at odds with the overall rating!

[Cask at the Three Horseshoes, Marlow] Pours deep amber gold. Smells lemony. Taste is refreshingly and dominantly of grapefruit pith. The ale behind is another one of Rebellion’s paint-by-numbers monthly jobs, but it’s lifted above their average beer by the grapefruit. In the tail there’s enough bitterness to satisfy without destroying the flavour. Good effort this, although I’m surprised they released it as their October special - I’d have enjoyed it more on a warm summer evening than a cold autumn one!

Cask at the Wenlock Arms London on 8th September 2009. Pale gold colour with white head that soon disappears but leaves initial lacing. Light and hoppy with strong herb/hemp notes in kick and a dry finish. Pleasant and drinkable without being too heavy. Part of a series of beers Rebellion are brewing to commemorate the "credit crunch".
