Description
Goose Island Beer Company began as a single brewpub opened in 1988 by John Hall. By 1995, John’s beer had become so popular that he decided to open a larger brewery, along with a bottling plant to keep up with demand. 1999 brought even more growth, along with an additional brewpub, and today, what was once one man’s pint-filled dream has become the Goose Island empire you know and love.

in 2011, Goose Island Beer Company was acquired by Anheuser-Busch InBev. Since then, we’ve continued to brew beer that we’re proud of and now we get to share these beers with our friends both nationwide and internationally.

750ml bottle. 2006. Full of aromas and flavors, nicely balanced, this was an enjoyable strong ale. Muddy, dark brown body. Light brown, lasting head. Heavy malt aroma of molasses and caramel. Notes of dough, raisin, prune, port and licorice. All this is balanced with bourbon both in aroma and flavor. The bourbon, however, is far from overpowering. The flavor is moderately sweet and moderately bitter. Medium body. Fizzy carbonation — too much so. Long finish.

Bottle and first rating on the new computer after a lovely little hard drive crash pushed the last machine out of service. Thought maybe Matilda would be a good way to start (better than Mikkeller Black Hole or Weyerbacher Insanity.) Anyhow, Matilda is a lovely copper color... very transparent and highly carbonated, yet there is not much head forming. Smells like fruit and a bit of peppery hops... a bit of a sweetness to it. Flavor is familiar and nicely done. I get the feeling that I’ve had this beer a hundred times... Taste opens up with a sweet and fruity salvo that transitions to lovely candi sugar and cloves. All of this eventually fades to a bit of a pepper and banana/clove finish that reminds me a lot of yeast. Very nice.

Does not smell like IPA, that’s what I expected from the label. It actually smells a bit high octane. Clear like very light iced tea in color. Taste is quite fruity yet beery. Has a lot of belgie attitude but I can tell it is a US imitation of a belgie. Certainly not as refined as the real stuff. To say this is in the same class as Orval or East End Session #9 - Grisette is a big mistake. However, this is probably better than Affligem Blonden or Lagunitas #10 (formerly #9) or at least on par with the aforementioned junk. One of the worst so called belgies, I’ve tasted, but in a good way, heheheheh.

Bottle, Ale Cellar, Darlington. There’s a goose loose in tha hoose...Pours a warm golden colour with thinnish white head. Citrus hop aroma, piney grapefruit hop flavour balanced nicely with maltiness. Superb hop bitterness to finish. Very drinkable.

Bottle poured light golden, with thin white head. Some citrus fruit and vague hopiness in the aroma. Flavour not too awful but aftertaste dishwateresque. Expected a lot better. Insipid and very disappointing. Would not try again during any season.

Bottled on 2007-02-22, 1 year old, 8% ABV
It pours a cloudy orange-copper color, with a creamy head that disappears quite quickly. In the beginning the aroma is sweet and malty, but this as well vanishes; and later there is more accent on the partially fruity hop, light but nice. It has a good mouthfeel, with a very good toffee flavor and a good hopping, both well bitter and aromatic, with dry resins and character. Long final, very bitter, of Belgian memory. A solid Belgian Strong Ale.

Bottle: Muddy orange in color with a creamy, sandy head. Thick lacing. Scents of malty sweetness, bready, and some dark fruitiness. Graham crackers? Tastes sweet and citrusy. Dry florals and caramel malt show up soon. The crisp florals are backed nicely by this softening bready and caramel maltiness. Nice. Thanks Hopdog!

12 oz. bottle generously given to me by Gregis. 2007 vintage, best before 041208. Pour is clear cheddar cheese [TM] orange, with a big fluffy orangish white head. Beautiful aromas of citrus fruit - very soft and floral. In the background, can also find some grassiness and bitterness. Taste is a reflection of the nose, sweet orange citrus, some grassiness in the middle and a clean hop bitter finish. After taste has a touch of lingering heat, which was the only indication of the size of this one. The sweetness became a bit cloying as I continued to drink this one. Very nice, though the taste didn’t quite live up to the aroma for me. Good solid IIPA, thanks for giving me this one Greg.
