Description
Strathaven Ales is the pinnacle of traditional real ale brewing with our stone clad brewing kettle and well used brew-house based in an old mill dating back to the early 1800s. The mill originally manufactured crushed barley for the brewery trade and flour for the local artisan bakers and it sits next to the river Avon near the market town of Strathaven.

We consider our beers to be very traditional, our brewing, unlike modern facilities is a hands-on labour intensive process crafted by three generations of the same family.

Manufacturing in an old building brings its challenges and we have retained many of the original mill features and a large part of the original gearing. Although this often gets in the way we feel it is part of what ensures the beer has a character not achieved in modern production units.

Half, cask ale at Pot Still, many thanks to mr_h. White layer on the surface of a dark amber coloured body. Aroma of caramel malts added by the vapour of alcohol. Sweet fruity taste mixed with earthy malts. Ends dry with alcohol on the swallow. Medium bodied. So and so (Glasgow, 12.04.2012).

Cask at Archibald Simpson, Aberdeen. It pours red-amber, with a thick off-white head. The nose is a red fruit, jam, cardboard and even some Dairylea (soft cheese spread). The taste is leather, wood, earth, floral, red fruit, cheddar and some underlying sweetness, with dry finish. Medium body and soft carbonation. A bit odd, but inoffensive.

Cask @ JDW Elgin
Dark amber, hazy, thin white head, some lacing
Aroma - spices, touch of ginger, caramel malts
Taste - spices, ginger, sweet caramel malts, some dark sweet fruits, touch of toffee, light bitter hops
Palate - soft carb, medium body. Finish as main flavour, bit of a spicy malt linger, slight sourness
Overall - Quite a spicy beer - could pass off as an Xmas ale

Medium offwhite head. Paleish amber body with carbonation. Light strawy apple aroma with toffee, earth, and peas notes. Dry-sweetish floral fruity strawy taste with perfumy earthy notes. Mid-bodied. Mild, soft mouthfeel. Dryish mealy earthy peas and flowers aftertaste with perfumy smoky nutty notes. Interesting, drinkable, and quite different. I quite liked it. Cask, gravity at Merton Winter Beer Festival, 17th & 18th February 2012 Brown in colour with a slim light beige head, touch of haziness. Touch spicy with a distinct Chruistmas spicy feel to it, little powdery in the mouth and with a light bitterness. Bit of a one trick pony but not a bad one. A6 A3 T7 P3 Ov13 3.2

Medium beige head. Clear brown body. Perfumy caramelly earthy aroma with fruity notes. Dry-sweet fruity perfumy taste with caramelly notes. Mid-bodied. Mild, soft mouthfeel. Dryish roasty metallic aftertaste with apple, earth and caramel notes. Vaguely funky, too. It’s quite nice, but not great. (0.5l bottle, Centra Colosseum, Oslo.)
