Pours amber with a large, fading head.Nose shows phenolic and estery Belgian yeast, along with the typical doughy notes. Also present is some soft fruity hops with hints of grapefruit, but mainly its the apple/pear notes from the yeast. A little faint. The flavours are also more Belgian than American, with more light fruit, alcohol and doughy notes showing. Underneath is some sweet bready malt and caramel, followed by a bold, sharp bitterness, showing the American influences.Body could be a little lighter.

From a 330ml bottle on 26/5/2012. Pours a very dark brown, with a biggish head which disappears slowly. The aroma is primarily chocolate and toffee malts. Flavour wise there is lots of dark chocolate, a touch of coffee, some quite distinct roasty notes, and a herbal backdrop. Finishes off with some nice hoppy notes. All up, a very solid brown ale with some classy packaging.

Bottle - a particularly attractive one, even considering the brewery is an offshoot of an art museum. Also tried on tap at GABS. Clear gold with a white head that fades to a coat but can be coaxed back with a swirl. Aroma of lemons, oranges, apples, coriander, white pepper, a little dough, vanilla. Slightly sweet but not very fruity, then tartish, then modestly bitter and spicy. Dry finish with lingering spices. Nice balance but not terribly involving. Pleasant aperitif.

Tap. Hazy straw with a thick white that fades quite quickly. Aroma of lemon syllabub , white pepper, cardamon, cloves, a little Sichaun pepper. Slightly creamy mouthfeel, but it’s a little on the thin side. Sweetish dough, lemony sourness, vibrant spices in a finish that’s quite dry and bitter. Could do with a little more body, but there’s plenty of character.
