330mL bottle, pours a deep dark red with a small beige head. Aroma has notes of brown sugar, big chewy caramel malts, and some resinous hops in the background. Flavour has a nice, rich, dry caramel malt base, big bready malts, and plenty of residual bitterness. The hops are there, but don’t contribute hugely to the flavour, just to the aftertaste. Solid malt profile and good balance. Very good imperial red.

330mL bottle. Pours murky dark amber with a small beige head. Rich caramel malts on the nose. Flavour is rich and malty, deep caramel and toffee-like expression, nice burnt sugar bitterness. This is a solid malt-forward ale.

On tap at Doble Malta, pours jet black with a small dark brown head. Aroma is full of deep roasted malt, a hint of smoke, dark sugars, and a hint of earthy coffee. Flavour is rich, with intense roasted malt, earthy coffee, a hint of cocoa, dark sugars, and more roast. That’s got great malt complexity, with deep roast, dark burnt sugars, and a tiny hint of smoke. This is excellent.

On tap at Morenos, pours black with a small brown head. Aroma has plenty of dark cocoa, medium roast, and a touch of burnt sugars. Flavour has burnt sugars, dark cocoa powder, some roast, light nutmeg, and unfortunately some tartness. Doesn’t really come together—jumbled and incoherent, totally unlike the original Xocoveza from Stone. It’s alright but definitely not hitting the right notes.

On tap at Drunken Dog, pours a lightly hazed pale golden with a medium white head. Aroma has some spicy hops, earthiness, and biscuity malt. Flavour is a little brighter, with some resinous hops, light pinecone-like spiciness, and sweet cereal malt. Not the cleanest or brightest expression, but the balance is decent. Not bad.

On tap at Morenos. Pours black with a beige head. Chocolate and spices on the nose. Flavour has cinnamon, nutmeg, chilies, cacao. Not as much roast as I was hoping for. Someone spilled the spice drawer I think.

On tap at Drunkendog Condesa. Pours clear light gold with a white head. Bright notes of tropical fruit on the nose. Flavour has a sweet malt base with fresh grass and tropical fruit from the hops. A bit muddled, but still very reasonable.
