Description
Sixpoint was founded in 2004 (we like to say it was born at the dawn of civilization, though that’s a story for another time…) in the rough and tumble neighborhood of Red Hook, BKLYN. It was essentially a cult brewery — draft-only, mysterious, cryptic…

In 2010 we released our canned creations, and have been tweaking, improving, and releasing new formulations ever since. Then in May of 2017, we took our biggest step forward to date, releasing all of our ales raw and unfiltered, and simultaneously incorporating new and incredible raw materials obtained over years of sourcing.

In November 2018, Sixpoint was acquired by Artisanal Brewing Ventures.

Cask at Brazen Head - after having the Granpa’s Nerve Tonic the night before, I can honestly say that this looked and tasted very much like it - of course, this isn’t exactly bad - cloudy brown beer - fresh, hoppy, "yup, that’s sixpoint" aroma - rye is apparent but not powerful - tastes hoppy and lightly fruity - some rye in the mix - nothing particularly belgian about it...at all - a bit of dark fruit (fig?) and spice - another tasty, albeit homogeneous sixpoint offering.

Thanks to beastiefan2k for sharing the growler (and leaving the leftovers at our place, which I am currently consuming) - hazy red-brown beer, with a small ring of lace - strong piny hop aroma, with an undercurrent of brown sugar and nutmeg - a nice balance of strong dry hop flavor, and sweet caramel malt flavor - some light fruity character brings with it a slight tartness - some subtle spicy character - just slightly different for a sixpoint beer, but not by much - tasty, though.

Cask samples at ABF on 6/16/07
Nearly transparent, but for a slight haziness, the body is a light brown mix of soft mahogany and light tan hues. Beige head sits atop with moderate retention and light lacing.
A beautiful mix of wood-smoked nuttiness and easygoing chocolate mixes with a stronger hint of Spanish coffee-like character. Pale malts add vanilla/honey and a chocolate-peanut-caramel character is achieved, drying out on the finish to become lightly roasty, but keeping a moderate amount of malt sweetness. Big, thick, rich aroma, that despite its strength, never seems overdone. Definitely seems like a mix between a brown and robust porter, with the better qualities of each, IMHO (the sweet, soft maltiness of the former, with the nutty, roasty, chocolatey complexity of the latter).
Peanut brittle, mixed with toffee and milk chocolate seems to be my best approximation of the flavor, with a deliciously chewy, fully malty, rich body. Carbonation is still ample and the attenuation is done well, with no fatiguing sweetness building up. Roasty, heavily nutty carob-like flavors add complexity and give it some uniqueness. Shane’s malting is always impressive and this is one of his best. Easy-drinking for sure, with only perhaps a bit too much nuttiness and light breadiness to complain about.

CBF07 sample from what I guess was one of Jeppes bottles, thanks to MPA for sharing Jeppes bottle :) Pours brown hazy. Aroma is roasted malt and a nice lifting by the aroma hops. Flavour is chocolate, roasted malt and slight coffee blended in with a good hops flavour. A slight citric note is taking out the darkness. Finish is hoppy and soft malty. Very good indeed.

Tap at Bobbique - very turbid, yet somehow glowing orange body, with a thick, pillow-like head - quite a citrus/hop aroma (no suprise), but the wheat malt lends some nice, earthy notes of raw grain and grass/hay - mild flavors of honey and apricot start things off, along with an almost belgian-like yeasty quality - some bready notes and touches of cracked wheat - light dough and nuttiness - none of the banana and clove one expects from these types of beers, but for me that’s a welcome change - finishes with some crisp hops (which are actually quite restrained for these guys) - a nice variation of the style.

Tap at Bobbique - perfetly clear golden, with a gigantic, foamy, well-retained head - grassy, herbal aroma, with notes of lemon zest, light peppery/spiciness - mild honey sweetness and a bit of lemon at first, but no apparent pilsner malt qualities - actually, not much malt presence at all, leaving the beer a little thin-flavored in the middle - a slightly higher hop profile than your average pils (no suprise from these guys) swells up near the end, along with some light grassy character, leaving the finish dry and crisp - overall, mildly sweet/fruity, ending with dry hoppiness, lacking the character and complexity of some of the better examples of the style - quite drinkable, though.

On tap at Kettle, NYC. Pour is a cloudy amber with a normal off white head. Aroma is initially rye, then malt and finally hops. Taste is pretty much the same, in the same progression. Overall a nice beer.

Tap at bobbique - I was excited to find this, as well - dark brown pour with light making it through the edges of the off-white head - roasted malts dominate the aroma, with hints of milky sweetness - I didn’t really sense a lot of hops in the aroma, nor in the flavor - medium-bodied with a slick mouthfeel - there is bitterness there, but it’s more like a coffee bitterness - a bit of cream and a semi-sweet, roasted malt finish - nothing stand-out, but a solid sweet stout.

Draft at Bobbiques, poured into a pint glass. I was very pleased to find this especially in Long Island, since 6point is not to common around here. Don’t think it has been made for about a year actually. Color is black with a few brown tinges, small but strong head. Aroma is slightly sweet, strong fruity and citrus hoppiness, anda bit of milk/lactose. Taste is very nice, present roastiness, with a lot of hoppiness (again fruit and citrus). Just enough "stout" in here for me to enjoy the hops. Finishes with a strong hop bitterness. Medium carbonation, felt and works well with the hop bitterness. I usually do not like hoppy stout but for the second time 6point has impressed me with a hoppy stout.
