Description
Sixpoint was founded in 2004 (we like to say it was born at the dawn of civilization, though that’s a story for another time…) in the rough and tumble neighborhood of Red Hook, BKLYN. It was essentially a cult brewery — draft-only, mysterious, cryptic…

In 2010 we released our canned creations, and have been tweaking, improving, and releasing new formulations ever since. Then in May of 2017, we took our biggest step forward to date, releasing all of our ales raw and unfiltered, and simultaneously incorporating new and incredible raw materials obtained over years of sourcing.

In November 2018, Sixpoint was acquired by Artisanal Brewing Ventures.

tap. Pours hazy copper into a shaker. Thin head hugs rim. Resin and malt aromas. Crisp with caramel and orange citrus upfront and a relaxed resin finish.

Manhattan Cask Fest - hazy dark gold beer - smells very hoppy and phenolic, with citrus fruitiness and bitter herbs - a bit of a mess in the flavor - a lot of alcohol, rubbery phenols, a touch of sulfur - some belgian-ish sweetness, spices, and potent hops try to cover these things up, but do a bad job of it - very hot finish - spleh - a mess, at least in this cask.

Growler from Bellport - These guys don’t attempt lagers very often, so I was anxious to try this one - pours a dark ruby, with a frothy, off-white head that lasts quite some time - aroma of roasted nuts, toffee, a little bit of woody and smoky character, and undercurrents of fruit (raisin, cherry) - the palate is actually a bit brash for a doppel - strong, leafy hops present first, followed by a fairly strong sweetness, which brings with it toffee, cookie dough, raisin, chocolate - the hop bitterness comes back to squash the sweeter flavors near the finish, but there is a lingering doughy quality and notes of roasted nuts, as well as a touch of odd tartness at the very end - I agree with Joe that this was not lagered long enough, and as a result it lacks the smoothness you would expect for the style - the bitterness is also on the high side, but I guess that’s Sixpoint for you - still, if you overlook those things, it’s still fairly enjoyable to drink. (PS - this is an awesome name for a beer)

Pretty amber/brown pour with lasting head. Spicy, malty, caramel, some toasted malts, and floral hops. Full bodied, but still easy to drink. This was the perfect match for my burger at Stand in NYC. Wish I had ordered two!

Hazy dark straw/amber colour. Melony aroma with yuzu, kumquat and pale malt. Smooth palate, medium bitterness w/ a grapefruity character on the back of the tongue. Sweet pale malt taste with melons and orangey citrus notes. Complex, nuanced, balanced.

Dark purple beer that pours with minimal carbonation - fairly sweet aroma, with mild peat, dark fruits, bubble gum, and root vegetables - low carbonation, slick mouthfeel - starts rather sweet, with strong notes of plum - strong peat character and earthy/vegetal qualities emerge after that - spicy hops dry things out a little bit, and lingering smoke lasts long through the finish - lacks the depth of character a good scotch ale should have, but it’s fairly tasty, and the lingering smoke gives it extra points in my book.

Tap @ Mugs, poured into a 12oz Blue Point glass from their cask fest... whats up with that? I do not think that Sixpoint made a fresh batch of this so I think this has just been stuck in distribution (or bar) since December. This is probably why I was not as impressed as everyone else by this beer, for my tastes Sixpoint is always best fresh. Either way this is as black as night. Aroma of prune-y, watered down coffee and dark malts. Taste those aspects and is a bit weaker. Kind of got a bit of a watery feel from the body. I would love to try this fresher (if they ever make it again, which I doubt).

Growler - turbid orange beer, with a soapy lace that never quite kicks into a full head - the aroma has the expected hop explosion I’ve come to expect from Sixpoint, but the use of PNW hops gives it a kind of citrusy, California IPA kind of smell (very grassy and herbal, with an almost acidic citrus character), along with faint bready and yeasty aromas - medium carbonation, and quite full-bodied for the style - the scottish ale yeast does lend a marked british character to the beer, mostly in the form of a biscuity finish - beyond that, this is standard Sixpoint in top form - a mouth-watering hop combination that works really well with the malts, neither one really asserting dominance - a little bit spicy, with oranges and a touch of strawberry - it is very much like Bengali Tiger, which is not a bad thing at all - very nice indeed.

Draught@The Ginger Man, NYC
Hazy golden color, small white head. Fruity nose - some exotic fruits like carambola and lychee in the aroma. Very American-style tripel with lots of fruity yeastyness (mango, apricot). Medium-bodied. Nice alcoholic kick in the finish. Fireplace tripel. Just not too complex to get high 3’s.

12oz bottle from the super cooler brewer/owner, Shane. As far as I understand it’s a homebrewering like hand bottle. It pours a completely black body with a lightly tan colored head, which is pretty strong. The head never really goes away and leaves a strong lacing. Aroma is strong as well with maltiness that is slick and oily. Then comes some stinging alcohol with light meat smoke. It’s light smoke with thick malt and touches of alcohol, its cool. Taste is again strong with alcohol, prunes and smoke. It finishes with a toffee candy. The body is a bit light for all the strong flavors and the alcohol touches and it tickles the tongue. In general the alcohol is too much but the other characteristics make up for it.
