Draft. Solid, dark brown body with nice whipped tan head. Roasted malts seem to predominate both the aroma and taste. Strong hints of smoke in the flavor and notes of chocolate coming through in the sweet backbone. There is a slight bitterness in the aftertaste indicating some hop presence. Chewy. Medium body is clean in the finish. This porter is nicely crafted.

Tap and Spuyten Duyvil - comes out of the tap a burnt orange in color, with long lasting, sticky white head - the main "spice" appears to be hops (both in the aroma and flavor), but I do detect a hint of ginger - loads of syrupy sweet malts battle with the hops for dominance, and, in the and, win out - caramel, gingerbread, even a hint of chocolate - actually, a little too sweet for me, but still another solid beer from Sixpoint.

Quite a solid porter, and unlike some other beers from these guys, they didn’t hop the hell out of it - the dark, roasted malts come to the front, along with an almost lactic sweetness - some vanilla and cherries come in late - finishes with an almost sticky malt sweetness - really quite nice.

Hazy orange golden ale with a thin white head. Lightly diacetyl aroma with spicey malt notes. Stale. Rather bland malt with strong cardboard and light coriander notes. Blaaahhh! On tap at Blue Tusk, Summer 2005.

This beer was supposed to be released (bottled) before Thanksgiving, and it took until after Christmas for me to find it (on tap) at Barcade - I was, naturally, quite excited - quite a turbid, dark brown appearance out of the tap - small tan lacing - aroma is actually quite piney/hoppy, with hints of cocoa, some coffee, most of the "classic" impy aroma traights - flavor has lots of chocolate up front, some caramel malt as well - but then a very juicy hop character settles in - very woody, even a touch of citrus/pine hop flavor, which obliterates most of the "imperial stout-like" flavors - it’s like it starts as an imperial stout, and ends as an imperial IPA - this in an of itself is no reason to complain, but because of it, what the drinker is left with is a confused beer that never really makes a solid "statement," if that makes sense (I’m using a lot of quotation marks in this rating, aren’t I?) - lacking complexity and, in the end, palate-confusing - good, but still a bit of a disappointment.

On draught pretty much everywhere in Boston (though this particular sample was at Publick House on 12/20/05).
A deep blackish-brown pour, low filtration with a moderate amount of beige-tan head that recedes slowly to cover, leaving little bits of lace. Aroma conveys strong roasted malts, yet soaked in caramel they are with a hint of toffee and a full dose of green, floral hops, yet they are not dominant and allow the other notes to contend. Low on any chocolate-like notes from the nose, though not completely lacking, with a hint of light vinousness. The flavor begins with a mix of caramel-toffee sweetness, lightly dried by the coffeeish roast. Prunes and light concord grapes through the middle, with a touch of cola-like notes. Texture softens somewhat as it warms. It begins quite creamy, with a well-controlled carbonation. As the flavors unfold, it remains quite layered. Toffee, butterscotch, coffee, dark fruits and finally a finishing touch of bitter American hops.....but not too bitter! Alcohol very well concealed. Not taking this as an Imperial stout, but just a rich American stout, I think it comes off quite well-done. Nothing sticks out awkwardly.

Draught pint at Sunset Grill, 11/2/2005. Chill-hazed golden-amber-beige with a fizzy white head, not long retained. Aroma of biscuity, grainy malt, sour fruits and white pepper, with plant stalks and strange herbs. ???? Flavor begins sour and rather meaty (spoiled meat, rotten cabbage) with sourish, bready munich-like malts and some dry biscuits. More old fruits, a slight bitter sensation and a lingering, unpleasant acidity. Mouthfeel is lively, and watery on end, with moderate carbonation. Light alcohol apparency towards the end, unpleasant. Like to think that this is a bad sample, but I see that Andre also noted vegetable notes. A Belgian session ale?? No, that’s orval.

Draught pint at Sunset Grill, 11/2/2005. Dark brown, with some black colors swirling around and just a hint of deep ruby on the edges. Borderline transluscent, with a small tan-beige head atop that has fair retention without any lacing. Aroma does not show any smoke, but more a black chocolate and coffee roast, with some vanilla cream and medium-dry caramel. Lightly green, fresh fruity and mildly bitter hops are noticeable as well. Flavor begins with smoke, however and is well integrated with a lightly sweet chocolate-espresso note. The smoke is very light, relative to other smoked beers, but brings images of charred wood, turkey bacon and charred burgers, though maybe charred isnt the right word, as it’s not bitter and astringent, just not very juicy and oily/fatty tasting. Chocolate and caramel build on the palate and by the end of the glass, the smoke is not very apparent. Light roast throughout, with hops that are more bitter than flavorful. Didnt get as much complexity as was hoping for, nor was the body exactly full. Lively mouthfeel, moderate carbonation and no alcohol apparency.

Pint on nitro? at Sunset Grill, 11/2/2005. Well if this isnt nitro then this is certainly the largest, most dense and wonderful creamy white head I’ve seen in a long time on draught. The beer is clear and brassy-amber. Head is very well-retained with light lacing. Nose has lovely expressive munich malts, with light sweaty and nutty hops. Strong and only lightly bitter, but well integrated with the malt flavors. Light yellow fruits, vanilla and warm sourdough baguette. Very interesting and well done aroma which suggests good things to come. And I’m not disappointed. Flavor is strong of sourish munich malt, with light toasty vienna malt, that does not seem very husky (nice). Lemon-nectarine hops bitterness with just the right amount of malt sweetness with a touch of sweaty, metallic (not really a bad thing) hops flavor. Hops flavor really stays with you on this one, with a yeast that sets up shop in your mouth and builds. A really nice beer, my new favorite from six point. Medium body, only light wateriness on end, with a lively mouthfeel and moderate carbonation. No alcohol apparency. Thinking about it makes me want more!

On draught at Sunset Grill, 10/27/2005 with SuIIy. Looks the part, a foamy white head atop a chill-hazed tangerine-amber colored beer, with small bubbles and moderate retention and lacing. Aroma has a spicy, herbal and celery-like feel to it, with lemons and limes and light cookie dough in the background. Balanced and pleasant aroma. Flavor begins with hops bitterness and flavor, which is refreshing at first. The hops profile gets to be rather boring, however, and the Belgian yeast just dosent agree with me. Too muddled and sweetish. Havent really gotten in to any of their Belgian beers yet, though. Bitterness waxes as hops flavor wanes, creating more lemons/tangerines and a very dry, floral bitterness. Sweet cookie-like malt in the background does not add any interesting complexity. Mouthfeel is lively, with a bit of wateriness, and a medium body overall. No alcohol apparency.
