Description
CRATE was established in 2012 when the Olympics were in full swing just over the canal, and Hackney Wick was changing fast. CRATE thrives on creativity, free thinking, and working hard. The experimental brewhouse is where all the Limited Edition beers are created.

Latest news November 2020:
The situation is complex, but it seems that there were two separate companies, one for brewing and one for the bar business. Both hit financial trouble, and the brewing company went into administration. Truman's, needing a new site due to delays with their new brewery, are currently brewing in Crate's old brewing space. But the website is still online and Crate beers are still available...

Half-pint, keg at Crate Taproom. Shared with Finn. Cloudy orange coloured body under a rocky, pearl white head that laced quite well. Juicy oats on the nose. Fresh hop fruity taste of orange and juicy wheat. Hints of fruity bitterness to the ending. Medium bodied. Pretty alright. (London 17.11.2021).

Bottle shared at Chris and Ruth Pre-GBBF 2017 tasting - London. Cheers! Pours unclear red with a creamy, white head. The nose holds a mix of funk and raspberry. Medium sweet with more funk, poo, raspberry, other berries. Medium bodied with massaging carbonation. Decent balance in the finish, further berry tang, lingering funky dryness. Nice one on the whole.

330ml can. Poured a clear black colour with a short-lived frothy tan head. The aroma is roasty malt and saccharine. The flavour is moderate to strong sweet, with a rich, light oily, roasty, greasy sweet pastry, lactose, vanilla, light dry pepper spice, light liqourice, light floral hop palate. Medium bodied with soft carbonation. Nice, but perhaps a little too sweet up front. I could picture my scowling dentist as I drank this!

Gushing to towering, dense yellowish head, pitting in lacey over clear metallic golden beer. Citrus esters, mainly tangerine/mandarine, bit of banana, very fresh-smelling. Bitter-leafy-fruity. Bit of chalk, dusty. Light but lond tapering out of the aftertaste, getting a bit metallic along the way. Light body, yet quite slick; creamy feel from the head and good carbonation. Pretty good, shame about the brewery! Thx to Stef!

330ml can BBE Apr-21. Hazy orange-gold, small white head, excellent retention and lacing. Nice aroma of grapefruit, mango, grain, lemon citrus. Taste is a grapefruit, grass, semisweet, biscuit malts, light to moderate body. This might not be the freshest but its still pretty decent.

330ml bottle BBE April-20 from lowcostbeer.com. Will probably be one of the last laypersons to drink this brew now they have gone out of business. Pale gold, small white head, little retention. Surprisingly still a very hoppy aroma, with melon, grapefruit and a touch of resin. Its more like a pale ale. Taste is more like a lager, but still a hoppy one. Straw, grass, grapefruit, moderate bitterness with a lemon and lime citrus in the finish which is very good. Body is light but not watery, nice spritzy carbonation on the palate but not overdone. This is a very good lager/pale hybrid. Shame this brewery has gone under.
