Cask at Crewe Dgo, Crewe. Pours a slightly hazy dark copper with a small off-white head and good lacing. There’s roasted nuts in the aroma along with malts and hints of caramel. Quite similar in the mouth, where the main flavours are malts and traditional hops plus traces of ginger and other spices. Quite highly carbonated, and the finish is decidedly bitter. This is a decent session bitter – packs quite a punch for it’s strength.

Cask at Crewe Dog, Crewe. Pours a very dark reddish-brown with a small cream head. Malts mainly in the aroma, with some caramel and dark fruits. In the mouth, the sweetness and chewiness of winegums is the first thing to be noticed. Malts come through together with raspberries and a hint of chocolate. Finish is fairly fruity. Decent enough mild.

Cask at Crewe Dog, Crewe. Pours a clear bright golden orange, with a small white head. There’s a vague aroma of citrus, but nothing much. In the mouth there is an initial burst of sweet malts, before floral hops take over. Quite bitter they are too, and this lasts into the dry finish. A simple beer, but done very well.

Third, cask, guest ale at Brewery Tap (Spitting Feathers). Shared with Finn. Almost black in the glass, bubbly beige head, clingy lacing. Lightly roasted, earthy malts on the nose. Flavoured with dark malts and dark fruits. Roasted bitter tail. Easy to drink. Satisfying. (Chester 26.01.2020).

Cask at Brewery Tap, Chester Pours a very dark brown with a small cream head. Nose has hints of porridge. In the mouth it is sweet and creamy with hints of liquorice and dark fruits, and a touch of redcurrant sharpness. Finish is creamy and fruity. A nicely understated stout – one for sipping.

Cask @ Horse & Jockey, Grindley Brook. Pours gold, small white topping. Aroma of pale malt, distant fruit. Taste suggests its perhaps a few days past its best, or had laid in the line a while, gentle bitterness, some stale malt, light fruits.. not great.

Golden colour with no head. Aroma and flavour have a lot of bitter citrus peel. Very dry and hoppy.
