jjsint Profile - Brewver (Dev)

500ml bottle as part of a delivery from RAD Beer and drunk at home. Mid-gold and clear with a large rocky off-white head. Light smoke, a deep malty aroma with a metallic edge. Light, sweet taste, more smoke, leading to some gentle bittering hops and a short finish. Body's pretty watery even for the low alcohol content, but the full carbonation more than makes up for that. Maybe short of their best beers but this is a humdinger.

Handpull cask at the Lime Kiln, Bristol. Amber and clear with a small uneven ring of off-white head. Aroma of caramel malts, dark toffee. Sweet taste, has a bit of citrus uplift to it. More toffee toward the finish. Light body, almost no carbonation. Very traditional. Well made but I prefer a little more complexity to mark it higher.

I went to Llandoger Trow on a late Saturday afternoon, probably not the best time to enjoy its charms. It is very old, and apparently where Daniel Defoe met Alexander Selkirk and was inspired to write Robinson Crusoe. That sort of place. But in January, it’s full of friendly students instead of tourists. It’s a pretty massive pub, with a massive beer list (about 30, including 5 cask). It’s more quantity than quality although there’s some good ‘uns including beers from Yonder, weekend project, Drop Project, Mobberley. Not nearly as expensive as it could be. A great experience but I’d go outside of peak hours (and maybe tourist season).

Handpull cask at the Lime Kiln, Bristol. Mid- to dark brown, a little translucent, with a large beige/khaki head. Light aroma of dark malts, smoke, Marmite. Taste is winter spice, light grape, more Marmite. Bittersweet with a hoppy bitterness to finish. Body is surprisingly light, almost watery but there’s enough natural carbonation to give us a decent mouthfeel.

You could pass the Lime Kiln and not even clock it. On its own down a quiet street, the modern frontage belies a very traditional setup. Inside, you have two rooms separated by an open doorway. Now, the beer. Six casks, mostly local and sessionable (they like their Downlands here). Five keg also from mostly local breweries Bristol Beer Factory, Wiper and True). Plus a few ciders, it’s Bristol after all. Cask condition is amazing. A less celebrated stop but worth checking out.

Keg draught at Llandoger Trow, Bristol. Light to medium yellow gold, hazy with a tiny ring g of white head. Sweet pastry aroma, a little touch of citrus. More oing on when I down a sip. The sweet pastry gives way to a proper Key lime bitter/sourness. Its git a medium body but the carbonation is intense. So well done

Narrow heritage pub which also has amazing beer. There's not a lot of rooming the King's Head, but you will manage to get by. The beer is nothing short of amazing with six casks and six kegs on offer.i had a half of Kees 10th Anniversary stout (10%) so things were a bit hazy after that, but a pub very much worth visiting, one of the top in Bristol in fact.
