Visited September 2024 - we do normally try to support local independent pubs on our annual Lake District jaunts, but were forced into a Wetherspoons dinner out of necessity on a busy Saturday night after the staff at the Dog & Gun had lied to us about food being available there, and caused us to be too late for food at any other pubs. Fortunately the 'Spoons had both space and the chain's usual cheap and cheerful food. It seemed a little messy, but maybe that's not surprising late on a busy Saturday evening after dealing with ravenous packs of desperately hungry and exhausted fell walkers like us (the town was rammed that evening). But the service was friendly and fast, and the beer range and quality was better than at the D&G (ten cask including two local micros, plus the normal 'Spoons range of craft cans and macro taps and bottles). It's a long way off being the first choice of venue in Keswick (and, frankly, pretty average by 'Spoons standards), but on this occasion we were very glad it was there!

Bottle from Gloucester Services. Yellowy-gold with a light sparkle. Some funky tannic dryness up front is followed ny a sweet, cheap apple juice flavour. There's a waft of vanilla, but it's a little watery and doesn't taste the strength. It's ok, but it feels a little soulless.

Can from Asda, Wycombe. Having seen the Tooth & Claw logo I bought this thinking it was a rare (for me) Durham rate. Was pretty aggrieved to find in was Asda-commissioned & therefore counted for West Yorkshire instead. Still, at least it was fairly cheap... and the price is somewhat reflected in the product. It's a clear golden- amber beer with a white head and a light to middling fizz. There's some green grape, melon and coriander seed in there but it's a bit light and rather hidden by the bitterness. There's a slightly odd furriness to the mouthfeel, not sure what that's about. A reasonably crisp finish though. Increase the aroma hops and reduced the bittering ones a tad and this could be quite interesting. As it is though, it's average at best.

Can from HOTM. Thick purpley-red in colour. Thick, slushy mouthfeel too. Looks like a smoothie. Blackberry up front, then strawberries and raspberries, with the blueberries coming through in the finish. Sweet and surprisingly fresh, with a slight hint of sourness being the only sign of the underlying beer (or is that sourness coming from the fruit?). It's not a beer any longer, it's an alcoholic smoothie - as is evidenced by the fact that by beer-hating wife thoroughly enjoyed it. To be fair, I thoroughly enjoyed it too - I do like a good smoothie! Not entirely sure how to score it on a beer rating website though...?!

Can from American Candy & Liquor, Birmingham. New region tick for me. Gold with a white head and a light fizz. Dusty grains up front with a touch of sweetcorn. Improves towards the end with some honey and sweet lemon. Sub-par but drinkable.

Can from Sainsbury's, Wycombe - surprisingly the first I've rated in this style. Pale amber with a faint haze and a small white head. Lovely smell of papaya, peach and mango. Flavour is much more muted, still tropical notes with a hint of pine. Might be a pleasant creamy mouthfeel if it wasn't for the fact it's a bit too fizzy. Promised much, delivered less but still pleasant enough.

Can from Sainsbury's, Wycombe. Hazy pale yellow with a white head and an aggressive, prickly fizz. Pineapple to the fore with mango, lemon creams, a little white pepper and a faint hint of bitter grapefruit pith in the finish. It's a pleasant summer refresher apart from the annoyingly overdone carbonation.
