Cask at Arches, Burton on Trent (Outwoods brewery tap – not yet listed on Brewver). Pours a dark (almost very dark) reddish-brown with minimal scummy tan head and good lacing. There’s roasted malts, chocolate cake and some floral hops in the aroma. In the mouth it is quite bitter with a smooth and creamy texture. Flavours are mixed hops and roast malts with some smokiness and ginger. A little underlying sweetness can be detected later, alongside hints of parkin, nuts and dark fruits. Still a little bitternes in the finish thoufh. This is rather nice – you can’t beat a good Black IPA !

Bottle at Hops, Crewe (part of their “Tour de Fridge”). Pours a hazy / cloudy pale straw with a small foamy almost white head. The aroma is a curious mixture of bananas, bacon and strawberries. In the mouth it is quite sharp but with a little underlying sweetness. Initial flavour is lemon from the sharpness but this is soon swamped by strong coriander with wheat, yeast and orange peel also noticeable. Finish is dry and slightly spicy. This is a decent enough witbier, certainly refreshing, but if you don’t like coriander then it’s not for you !

Cask at Hops, Crewe. Pours almost black with minimal scummy cream head. There’s roasted malts in the aroma plus ginger and parkin. In the mouth it is quite sweet, but the most noticeable feature is the watery texture. Flavour has roasted malts and chocolate with hints of ginger. Later on there are traces of coffee and dark fruits as well, leading to a slightly fruity finish. This is reasonable though somewhat thin.

Cask at Crewe Dog, Crewe. Pours “bitter brown” with a small scummy off-white head and good lacing. Malts to the fore in the aroma alongside caramel, herbs and some hoppy hints. In the mouth it is quite bitter, smooth and with a creamy texture. Flavour has malts, hops, dried fruit and toffee, with hints of spice and ginger coming later. Bitterness lasts into the dry finish. This is a decent bitter with a spicy twist.
