On tap at Ebenezers, Nantwich (at 4.8%). Pours golden amber with a small off-white head and good lacing. The aroma has bread crusts and yeast with some hoppy traces. In the mouth it is quite bitter with a creamy texture. Flavour is mixed hops, spice and pine with some underlying malts and hints of marmalade and tropical fruit later on leading to a fruity and somewhat dry finish. This is decent – plenty of bite to it.

Cask at Cellar, Chester. Pours a very dark reddish-brown with a small foamy beige head and good lacing. The aroma is mainly chocolate but with some added cheesecake. In the mouth it is sweet and smooth with a creamy textue. Roasted malts and chocolate dominate the flavour with traces of cake, dark fruit and nuts. Finish is dry and malty. This is rather nice – not overwhelmed by the chocolate.

Cask at Pied Bull, Chester. Pours a cloudy golden orange with minimal foamy almost white head and good lacing. There’s tropical fruits and tangerine in the aroma. In the mouth it is briefly sweet before becoming quite bitter with a creamy texture. Oranges and floral hops in the flavour, plus citrus, lemon and marmalade coming through later. Finish is quite dry. This is reasonable if a little strange.

Cask at Bull & Stirrup, Chester. Pours a slightly hazy golden brown with minimal off-white head and good lacing. There’s nuts and autumn fruits in the aroma. In the mouth there is a little sweetness at first before bitterness comes through to dominate with a creamy texture (but not overly bitter). Flavour has traditional hops and malts at first with hints of ginger and herbs coming later. Bitterness lasts into the finish. This is a decent old school English style IPA.

On tap at Ebenezers, Crewe. Pours almost black with a medium sized frothy tan head and good lacing. The aroma is strongly chocolate plus hints of roasted malts and dark fruits. In the mouth it is briefly sweet at the start, before bitterness and sharpness come through in about equal measure. Flavour has chocolate, roasted malts and biscuit crumbs with hints of ginger, caramel and honey after a while. The dry finish is more sharp than bitter. This is decent.

In the mouth it’s bitter with a creamy texture, but with a little underlying sweetness. Floral hops give tropical fruit flavour with hints of peaches and spice coming later. Cask at Hops, Crewe. Pours a murky golden yellow with minimal off-white head and good lacing. The aroma has floral hops, melon and nuts. In the mouth it is quite bitter but with some underlying sweetness. Flavour has floral hops and grapefruit plus hints of mango and melon coming later leading to a slightly dry finish. As a beer, it’s reasonable but too much citrus influence for my taste.
