Cask at Bird in Hand, Stafford. Pours a pale straw with a medium sized foamy almost white head and good lacing. There’s malts and citrus in the aroma. In the mouth it is quite sweet but with some underlying sharpness. Floral hops bring citrus and lemon to the flavour with traces of grapefruit coming later. A little bitterness appears in the lemony finish. This is reasonable though it doesn’t really stand out from the crowd.

On tap at Ship Aground, Stafford. Pours a murky golden brown with almost no head whatsoever but still good lacing. There’s nuts and grapefruit in the aroma. In the mouth it is quite bitter with a creamy, but somewhat rough texture. Flavour is a strange mixture of melon, passionfruit and grapes with hints of ginger coming later. Not for me this one.

Cask at Ship Aground, Stafford. Pours golden amber with a sizable foamy off-white head and good lacing. The aroma has floral hops and oranges with just a trace of apricot. In the mouth there is a brief initial burst of malty sweetness before strongly bitter hops flood in and swamp everything – except marmalade, and hints of biscuits and spices. There’s still a strong bitterness in the finish. Not at all bad this one.

Cask at Pickled Pig, Stafford. Pours golden yellow with a small foamy almost white head and good lacing. There malts and peaches in the aroma, plus some hints of kiwi. In the mouth it is quite sweet but with a little sharpness also. Floral hops provide the flavour of citrus, tropical fruit and peaches with some hints of berry fruits coming later. Sweetness lasts into the finish. This is decent – certainly refreshing.

Cask at Lych Gate, Wolverhampton. Pours golden amber with a medium sized foamy almost white head and excellent lacing. The aroma is mainly malts and caramel with some hints of autumn fruits. In the mouth in fluctuates on the edges of sweet and bitter with malts, caramel and some traditional hoppiness. Later there are hints of honey, barley sgar and apricot. Bitterness wins out in the slightly dry finish. This is decent.

On tap at Last Heretic, Burton on Trent. Pours almost black with no head whatsoever. There’s chocolate and vanilla in the aroma. In the mouth it is rather sweet with flavours of chocolate, strawberries, cream and lactose. Later on there is a slight sharpness to the flavour with cola and hints of alcoholic strength. This is quite nice – but a bit too much flavouring and not enough beeriness !

Cask at Last Heretic, Burton on Trent. Pours jet black with minimal beige head. The aroma has roasted malts, molasses and alcohol. In the mouth it is quite sweet with a slightly watery texture. Flavour has roasted malts, alcohol and chocolate with hints of liquorice and vanilla coming later. Finish is decidedly boozy ! This is decent – and dangerously drinkable.
