Cask at Wigan Central, Wigan. Pours a very dark reddish-brown with a medium sized foamy cream head and good lacing. There’s a slight smokiness in the aroma, which otherwise has roasted malts, liquorice and hints of vanilla. Roasted malts to the fore again in the mouth, where it is slightly bitter. Flavour of traditional hops, liquorice and traces of dark fruits and chocolate. Later on there are hints of humbug sweets and cola. Bitterness lasts into the finish. This is a decent beer – but I’m not sure what is “US style” about it ?

Cask at Wigan Central, Wigan. Pours a dark (almost very dark) reddish-brown with a small foamy tan head and good lacing. The aroma has malts, almonds and a hint of chocolate. In the mouth it is quite sweet but with a little underlying bitterness. Malts to the fore again in the flavour, plus hints of honey and crusty bread. A little bitterness in the slightly dry finish. This is decent – plenty of flavour for its strength.

Cask at Swan & Railway, Wigan. Pours a very dark reddish-brown with a sizable (lively pour) frothy cream head and good lacing. Roasted malts ot the fore in the aroma, plus traces of liquorice and alcohol. Roasted malts again in the mouth where it is slightly sweet overall. Plenty of dark fruits in the flavour too, some rum and cola with hints of liquorice coming later. Finish is slightly fruity. This is quite nice – certainly plenty of flavour.

Cask at Moon under Water, Wigan. Pours “bitter brown” with a small foamy off-white head and excellent lacing. Plenty of malts in the aroma, and also some nutty hints. In the mouth it is quite bitter with a creamy texture, but also a little underlying sweetness. Flavour has roasted malts, traditional hops and spices with hints of ginger coming through later. Bitterness lasts into the slightly dry finish. This is decent.

Can from Ebenezers, Nantwich – drank at home. Pours a pale straw with an extremely transient frothy off-white head. There’s apples and spices in the aroma. In the mouth it is fairly sour but with an underlying sweetness. Apples and cinnamon are to the fore in the flavour, but there is also grape juice and hints of allspice and vanilla. Sweetness lasts into the finish. This is decent, but not really much sourness in it.

Bottle from local Polish shop - drank at home. Pours golden amber with minimal extremely transient cream head. An interesting mix of malts, honey, bread rolls and sugary sweetness in the aroma. Hints of cabbage and alcohol as well. In the mouth it is sweet and malty with a creamy almost cloying texture. Grains and corn very much in the flavour plus alcoholic strength and traces of honey and herbs. Actually I quite like this – though I wouldn’t want to drink more than one !
