27 April 2019. At Zythos Bierfestival. Deputy Taster: Anke. Cheers to Ama Deke, Erwin, John & Meeki! Hazy dark brown-black, lasting, thin, frothy, beige head. Aroma of vanilla bean, dried cherries, wood, almond, fondant, ‘carré confiture’, old tea bag. Taste is light malty sweet, nutty almond & toast, sour accents of cherries & brambleberries, some vinegar, bitter tones of wood, earth, tea & ‘raw’ vanilla bean, a bit yeasty, leading to a dry, herbal & earthy hoppy finish, where nuts, cherries, almond & yeast linger; alcohol remains well-hidden, perhaps hinting at Maraschino. Medium body, oily texture, fizzy carbonation. Not too shabby, certainly interesting, but could have used more punch in the taste.

Bottle shared with friends. Dark brown colour, beige foam. Too much carbonation, destroys a lot of the taste. Aroma of chocolate, tart cherries, vanilla, roasted malts. Taste is sweet, tart and light bitter.

Thank you Beerlover_Ben! Sampled draft @ M-Café. Dark brown, little tanned head. Nose is weird mocha, licorice herbal malt syrup, cacao. Taste is licorice, herbal, chocolate, cacao, weird malt syrup, not really getting the vanilla or any real cherry, weird malt syrup profile, BE qualities, basic licorice,... Odd definitely not your usual RIS with added stuff,... Doesn’t fully work but not bad, bit strange. Body is malty syrup, basic chocolate. Odd but not bad.

Bottle from De Hopduvel, thanks to Christophe for sharing. Thick and moussy, pale yellowish beige, cobweb-lacing, stable head, very dark ’chestnutty’ brown colour, almost black in general appearance with hazy mahogany edges. Interesting aroma of cherries (effectively used here apparently and shining through quite brightly), brown sugar, blue plums, milk chocolate, fermenting tree leaves, earth, hint of vanille beans, blackberries, honey, black tea, hazelnuts, pear, caramel sauce. Fruity onset, vivid with the cherries again coming through vividly, surrounded by sourish elderberry and brambleberry impressions, some sweeter peach and banana, softish carbo, smooth mouthfeel with a thin metallic edge. Caramelly malt base, tad nutty, ’filling’, with the cherry tartness lasting till the end over a mild toasted bitterish aspect; fruitiness and caramelly malt sweetness remain after swallowing. Nice, but the vanilla remains very understated and could have been much more pronounced for me. I also think this is a bit underrated here because many probably expect an intense, ’true’ American-style imperial stout - I’d say this is another argument for acknowledging a hybrid ’Belgian imperial stout’ category, which does not necessarily imply beers of an inferior level.

20/V/17 - 75cl bottle from De Hopduvel (Gent) @ Marie's place - BB: 20/XII/17 (2017-603) Thanks to Alengrin for the invite and to Christophe for sharing the bottle!

Slow gusher alert!
Little hazy dark brown beer, small creamy beige head, unstable, non adhesive. Aroma: sourish, pretty roasted, sweet caramel, some vanilla. MF: lively carbon, medium body. Taste: pretty sweet, caramel, little sourish, fruity, some cherries indeed, alcohol. Aftertaste: fruity, sourish touch, pretty roasted, fruity, bit sourish, red currents, pretty nice, despite the possible infection? Or did they just add too much bottle fermentation sugar? :p
